Good evening all Dharma masters, Dharma teachers, Dharma advisors, and Dharma friends: My name is Meina Co. Tonight I will be speaking about my encounter with Buddhism. However, before I do that I want to say that I am not articulate and also not good at public speaking. This is my second time speaking in front of a large group of people. Therefore, I would like to apologize in advance if I have spoken inappropriately and or if what I say offends anyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8af8\u4f4d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u3001\u53ca\u6cd5\u53cb\uff0c\u5927\u5bb6\u665a\u4e0a\u597d\uff1a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u53eb\u9867\u7f8e\u5a1c\u3002\u4eca\u665a\u6211\u5c07\u5206\u4eab\u6211\u8207\u4f5b\u6559\u7684\u76f8\u9047\u7d93\u6b77\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u5728\u6b64\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u5148\u8aaa\u660e\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u53e3\u624d\u4e26\u4e0d\u597d\uff0c\u4e5f\u4e0d\u64c5\u9577\u516c\u958b\u6f14\u8b1b\u3002\u9019\u662f\u6211\u7b2c\u4e8c\u6b21\u5728\u9019\u9ebc\u591a\u4eba\u9762\u524d\u767c\u8a00\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u6211\u8aaa\u4e86\u4e0d\u59a5\u7684\u8a71\uff0c\u6216\u8005\u6709\u4e0d\u5982\u6cd5\u7684\u8a71\uff0c\u6211\u5148\u5411\u5927\u5bb6\u9053\u6b49\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

I am Chinese but grew up in the United States. Before encountering Dharma I didn\u2019t know or care to know what Buddhism is or what a Buddhist is. I heard of the word \u2018Amitabha\u2019 but don\u2019t know what that is. I know Namo Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara as someone whom I can ask for help when I am in trouble. This is the extent of my awareness of anything Buddhist.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u662f\u5728\u7f8e\u570b\u9577\u5927\u7684\u83ef\u88d4\u3002\u5728\u63a5\u89f8\u4f5b\u6cd5\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u5c0d\u4f5b\u6559\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u6216\u4f5b\u6559\u5f92\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u4e26\u4e0d\u4e86\u89e3\uff0c\u4e5f\u4e0d\u5728\u610f\u3002\u6211\u807d\u904e\u300c\u963f\u5f4c\u9640\u4f5b\u300d\u9019\u500b\u8a5e\uff0c\u4f46\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u90a3\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u3002\u6211\u77e5\u9053\u89c0\u4e16\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u662f\u6211\u9047\u5230\u56f0\u96e3\u6642\u53ef\u4ee5\u8acb\u6c42\u5e6b\u52a9\u7684\u5c0d\u8c61\u3002\u9019\u5c31\u662f\u6211\u5c0d\u4f5b\u6559\u7684\u6240\u6709\u8a8d\u8b58\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I lost my father in 2014 and my mother in 2016. After my parents passed away I felt depressed and lost in life. I was frustrated with the ways things were in my life and the constant struggle of living in general. I started to question what is the point of all of this after having personally experienced the agony of losing loved ones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2014\u5e74\u6211\u5931\u53bb\u4e86\u7236\u89aa\uff0c2016\u5e74\u5931\u53bb\u4e86\u6bcd\u89aa\u3002\u5728\u7236\u6bcd\u904e\u4e16\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u611f\u5230\u6cae\u55aa\uff0c\u5c0d\u751f\u6d3b\u611f\u5230\u56f0\u60d1\u3002\u00a0\u00a0 \u6211\u5c0d\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u7a2e\u7a2e\u56f0\u5883\u548c\u4e0d\u65b7\u7684\u6399\u624e\u611f\u5230\u632b\u6557\u3002\u5728\u7d93\u6b77\u4e86\u5931\u53bb\u89aa\u4eba\u7684\u75db\u82e6\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u958b\u59cb\u8cea\u7591\u9019\u4e00\u5207\u7684\u610f\u7fa9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though I have a big family who played a big role in helping me take care of my parents, mentally, physically, and spiritually I was really drained from caring for both of my parents before they passed away. Seeing my exhaustion, one of my nieces suggested that perhaps it might be good for me to do meditation. Being depressed and lost I just wanted to have some space for myself to decompress.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5118\u7ba1\u6211\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u5927\u5bb6\u5ead\uff0c\u5728\u7167\u9867\u6211\u7236\u6bcd\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\u626e\u6f14\u4e86\u91cd\u8981\u89d2\u8272\uff0c\u4f46\u5728\u7236\u6bcd\u53bb\u4e16\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u5728\u5fc3\u7406\u3001\u8eab\u9ad4\u548c\u7cbe\u795e\u4e0a\u90fd\u611f\u5230\u6975\u5ea6\u75b2\u618a\u3002\u770b\u5230\u6211\u7684\u75b2\u618a\uff0c\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u500b\u59ea\u5973\u5efa\u8b70\u6211\u5617\u8a66\u6253\u5750\u3002\u7531\u65bc\u611f\u5230\u6182\u9b31\u548c\u8ff7\u832b\uff0c\u6211\u53ea\u60f3\u627e\u500b\u5730\u65b9\u8b93\u81ea\u5df1\u653e\u9b06\u4e00\u4e0b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

So I decided to give meditation a try not knowing what it was really about. The only type of meditation I am familiar with was the five-minute one which is part of a yoga class. I didn\u2019t know what Chan meditation was. Hence, I proceeded with the idea of meditation and googled it online.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u65bc\u662f\uff0c\u6211\u6c7a\u5b9a\u5617\u8a66\u6253\u5750\uff0c\u96d6\u7136\u6211\u4e26\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u9019\u5230\u5e95\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u3002\u552f\u4e00\u719f\u6089\u7684\u6253\u5750\u662f\u745c\u73c8\u8ab2\u4e2d\u7684\u4e94\u5206\u9418\u6253\u5750\u3002\u6211\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u79aa\u5b97\u6253\u5750\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u3002\u65bc\u662f\uff0c\u6211\u900f\u904e\u8c37\u6b4c\u641c\u5c0b\u4e86\u6253\u5750\u7684\u76f8\u95dc\u8cc7\u8a0a\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Of all the links that came through the search, two links to two different organizations seemed promising. One was Deer Park Monastery in San Diego and the other was the City of Ten Thousand Buddha. I once saw a documentary about Deer Park Monastery but never heard of the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. However, I chose CTTB because, frankly speaking, the room and board was cheaper than at Deer Park.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u641c\u5c0b\u7d50\u679c\u4e2d\uff0c\u6709\u5169\u500b\u770b\u8d77\u4f86\u5f88\u6709\u5e0c\u671b\u7684\u7d44\u7e54\u9023\u7d50\u51fa\u73fe\u4e86\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u500b\u662f\u4f4d\u65bc\u8056\u5730\u7259\u54e5\u7684\u9e7f\u82d1\u5bfa\uff0c\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u662f\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u3002\u6211\u66fe\u770b\u904e\u95dc\u65bc\u9e7f\u82d1\u5bfa\u7684\u7d00\u9304\u7247\uff0c\u4f46\u5f9e\u672a\u807d\u904e\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u6211\u9078\u64c7\u4e86\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\uff0c\u5766\u767d\u8aaa\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u9019\u88e1\u7684\u98df\u5bbf\u8cbb\u7528\u6bd4\u9e7f\u82d1\u5bfa\u4fbf\u5b9c\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was November when I called CTTB to register for the Thanksgiving Chan session and attended it. I thought the session was kind of short. So when I found out about CTTB\u2019s 3 week Winter Chan session I immediately signed up for it. Due to wanting to stay at CTTB longer I also signed up for the Amitabha session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u572811\u6708\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u6253\u96fb\u8a71\u7d66\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u5831\u540d\u4e86\u611f\u6069\u7bc0\u79aa\u4e09\uff0c\u4e26\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u79aa\u4e09\u3002\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u79aa\u4e09\u6709\u9ede\u77ed\u3002 \u7576\u6211\u5f97\u77e5\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u6709\u70ba\u671f\u4e09\u9031\u7684\u51ac\u5b63\u79aa\u4e03\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u7acb\u523b\u5831\u540d\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u3002\u7531\u65bc\u60f3\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u5f85\u5f97\u66f4\u4e45\uff0c\u00a0 \u6211\u9084\u5831\u540d\u4e86\u4f5b\u4e03\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I want to say my first official experience of CTTB was when I attended the Winter Chan sessions and the Amitabha Session back to back. I found that I really enjoyed learning about and practicing Chan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u6b63\u5f0f\u9ad4\u9a57\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u662f\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u4f5b\u4e03\u548c\u51ac\u5b63\u4e09\u9031\u79aa\u4e03\u3002\u6211\u767c\u73fe\u6211\u771f\u7684\u5f88\u559c\u6b61\u5b78\u79aa\u548c\u4fee\u79aa\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

One night I went to the Patriarch Hall where all the free books were and picked up a book thinking to read it for company. That book which I picked up turned out to be the English version of the Shurangama Sutra<\/em>. I must say the Surangama Sutra<\/em> is the first sutra that I actually picked up with my own hands and actually read it voluntarily.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6709\u4e00\u5929\u665a\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u53bb\u4e86\u7956\u5e2b\u6bbf\uff0c\u5728\u90a3\u88e1\u6240\u6709\u7684\u66f8\u7c4d\u90fd\u662f\u7d50\u7de3\u54c1\u3002\u6211\u62ff\u4e86\u4e00\u672c\u66f8\uff0c\u60f3\u8457\u8b80\u4e00\u8b80\u3002\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u7adf\u7136\u662f\u300a\u695e\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u7684\u82f1\u6587\u7248\u3002\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u8aaa\uff0c\u300a\u695e\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u662f\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u89aa\u81ea\u62ff\u8d77\u4e26\u4e3b\u52d5\u95b1\u8b80\u7684\u4f5b\u7d93\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The more I read this sutra the more intriguing it became even though I had no clue what Master Hua was commenting about. Everyday or rather every night I would look forward to reading this sutra.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u8d8a\u8b80\u9019\u90e8\u4f5b\u7d93\uff0c\u8d8a\u89ba\u5f97\u5b83\u5f88\u5438\u5f15\u4eba\uff0c\u5118\u7ba1\u6211\u4e0d\u660e\u767d\u4e0a\u4eba\u6240\u8b1b\u7684\u5167\u5bb9\u3002\u6bcf\u5929\u665a\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u90fd\u671f\u5f85\u8457\u95b1\u8b80\u9019\u90e8\u4f5b\u7d93\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being able to spend time at CTTB doing Chan was very therapeutic for me. I loved it and was thinking of coming back for the next Winter Chan in the following year. Throughout this entire experience I felt very grateful to Master Hua for having established such a wonderful place for lost people like me to take refuge and I wanted to repay Master Hua\u2019s kindness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u53c3\u52a0\u79aa\u4fee\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u975e\u5e38\u6709\u7642\u7652\u4f5c\u7528\u3002\u6211\u5f88\u559c\u6b61\u9019\u7a2e\u611f\u89ba\uff0c\u60f3\u8457\u660e\u5e74\u51ac\u5929\u518d\u56de\u4f86\u3002\u5728\u6574\u500b\u7d93\u6b77\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u5c0d\u4e0a\u4eba\u5275\u9020\u4e86\u9019\u6a23\u4e00\u500b\u7f8e\u597d\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u611f\u5230\u975e\u5e38\u611f\u6fc0\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u8981\u56de\u5831\u4e0a\u4eba\u7684\u6069\u5fb7\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As the days for me to leave CTTB were approaching, I looked for ways to somehow stay longer or come back soon. One day I was thrilled to discover that CTTB published their own books and magazines. I am a graphic designer who designs printed matter. So I offered my graphic design service by volunteering to help with designing layouts for books and magazines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u96e2\u958b\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u7684\u65e5\u5b50\u81e8\u8fd1\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u5c0b\u627e\u5404\u7a2e\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u5e0c\u671b\u80fd\u7559\u4e0b\u4f86\u6216\u76e1\u5feb\u56de\u4f86\u3002\u6709\u4e00\u5929\uff0c\u6211\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u5730\u767c\u73fe\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u51fa\u7248\u66f8\u7c4d\u548c\u96dc\u8a8c\u3002\u6211\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u96fb\u8166\u5716\u50cf\u8a2d\u8a08\u5e2b\uff0c\u5c08\u6ce8\u65bc\u5370\u5237\u8a2d\u8a08\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u6211\u64d4\u4efb\u7fa9\u5de5\uff0c\u5354\u52a9\u66f8\u7c4d\u548c\u96dc\u8a8c\u7684\u6392\u7248\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I was very happy for this opportunity because it allowed me to continue to stay at CTTB while utilizing my skill set for the magazine. During my time here as a volunteer, a Dharma Master introduced me to a book called One Hundred Dharmas. I was so enthralled by the content of that book. I looked forward to reading it every night before going to bed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u80fd\u6709\u9019\u500b\u6a5f\u6703\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5b83\u8b93\u6211\u80fd\u5920\u7e7c\u7e8c\u7559\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u4e5f\u80fd\u904b\u7528\u6211\u7684\u6280\u80fd\u70ba\u96dc\u8a8c\u6392\u7248\u3002\u5728\u64d4\u4efb\u7fa9\u5de5\u671f\u9593\uff0c\u4e00\u4f4d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5411\u6211\u4ecb\u7d39\u4e86\u300a\u767e\u6cd5\u660e\u9580\u8ad6\u300b\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u3002\u6211\u5c0d\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u7684\u5167\u5bb9\u611f\u5230\u975e\u5e38\u8457\u8ff7\u3002\u6bcf\u5929\u665a\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u90fd\u671f\u5f85\u8457\u95b1\u8b80\u5b83\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After that book I started to look for other texts to read. I remember carrying the Diamond Sutra in my backpack with me at all times for a few weeks hoping to have a pocket of free moments to read a sentence or two from that Sutra. I also attended a few of Professor Doug Powers\u2019 evening and afternoon community classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8b80\u5b8c\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u958b\u59cb\u5c0b\u627e\u5176\u4ed6\u7684\u7d93\u5178\u3002\u6211\u8a18\u5f97\u6709\u5e7e\u500b\u661f\u671f\uff0c\u6211\u7e3d\u662f\u628a\u300a\u91d1\u525b\u7d93\u300b\u653e\u5728\u80cc\u5305\u88e1\uff0c\u5e0c\u671b\u80fd\u5728\u7a7a\u9592\u6642\u8b80\u4e00\u5169\u53e5\u3002\u6211\u4e5f\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u5e7e\u6b21\u9b91\u679c\u52d2\u6559\u6388\u7684\u665a\u9593\u548c\u4e0b\u5348\u793e\u5340\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

 I remember in one of those classes I heard a laity say something to the effect of \u2018you are reciting when you are not reciting. You are not reciting when you are reciting\u2019. I thought that statement was so profound that it made me want to continue to attend these classes.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u8a18\u5f97\u5728\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u5802\u8ab2\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u807d\u5230\u4e00\u500b\u5728\u5bb6\u5c45\u58eb\u8aaa\u4e86\u985e\u4f3c\u300c\u4f60\u5728\u5ff5\u8aa6\u6642\u4e0d\u662f\u5728\u5ff5\u8aa6\uff0c\u4f60\u4e0d\u5ff5\u8aa6\u6642\u537b\u662f\u5728\u5ff5\u8aa6\u300d\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u8a71\u3002\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u9019\u53e5\u8a71\u975e\u5e38\u6df1\u523b\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u60f3\u7e7c\u7e8c\u53c3\u52a0\u9019\u4e9b\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By that time I was hooked on learning more about Dharma. Therefore, a few days later in another one of Professor Power\u2019s classes, the class was passing out books titled The Six Perfections<\/em>. When I saw that book, in spite of not really knowing anything other than the text description that was on the front pages of the book, I felt so joyful to have crossed paths with that text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5230\u90a3\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u5c0d\u5b78\u7fd2\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7522\u751f\u4e86\u6fc3\u539a\u7684\u8208\u8da3\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u5e7e\u5929\u5f8c\uff0c\u5728\u53e6\u4e00\u5802\u9b91\u679c\u52d2\u6559\u6388\u7684\u8ab2\u4e0a\uff0c\u767c\u653e\u4e86\u300a\u516d\u5ea6\u6ce2\u7f85\u871c\u300b\u7684\u66f8\u3002\u7576\u6211\u770b\u5230\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u6642\uff0c\u5118\u7ba1\u6211\u5c0d\u6b64\u66f8\u7684\u8a8d\u8b58\u53ea\u9650\u65bc\u6249\u9801\u4e0a\u7684\u6587\u5b57\u63cf\u8ff0\uff0c\u4f46\u80fd\u548c\u6b64\u66f8\u7d50\u7de3\uff0c\u6211\u9084\u662f\u611f\u5230\u975e\u5e38\u9ad8\u8208\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I felt like I found something that I had been looking for. I wanted to get my hands on that text. I was determined to do all that I can to learn everything I can about the Six Paramitas. I didn\u2019t know where, when, or how this was going to happen but I had to find a way to make it happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u627e\u5230\u4e86\u9577\u4e45\u4ee5\u4f86\u4e00\u76f4\u5728\u5c0b\u627e\u7684\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u8981\u7372\u5f97\u9019\u672c\u66f8\uff0c\u4e26\u6c7a\u5b9a\u76e1\u6211\u6240\u80fd\u5b78\u7fd2\u95dc\u65bc\u516d\u5ea6\u7684\u6240\u6709\u5167\u5bb9\u3002\u6211\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u9019\u5c07\u5728\u4f55\u6642\u3001\u4f55\u5730\u3001\u5982\u4f55\u767c\u751f\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u627e\u5230\u8fa6\u6cd5\u5be6\u73fe\u5b83\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Luckily, a few days later someone I worked with told me DRBU was looking for students. I wasted no time in applying for the university.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5e78\u904b\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u5e7e\u5929\u5f8c\uff0c\u6709\u4eba\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u6cd5\u754c\u4f5b\u6559\u5927\u5b78\u6b63\u5728\u62db\u6536\u5b78\u751f\u3002\u6211\u7acb\u523b\u7533\u8acb\u4e86\u9019\u6240\u5927\u5b78\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, prior to this sudden development of my insatiable appetite for the Dharma, having lived at CTTB as a volunteer for a few months I once heard that the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas has a university called Dharma Realm Buddhist University. But I never really paid attention to it because I thought it was not for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u6211\u5c0d\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7a81\u7136\u975e\u5e38\u6e34\u6c42\uff0c\u611f\u89ba\u7121\u6cd5\u6eff\u8db3\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u5df2\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u7576\u4e86\u5e7e\u500b\u6708\u7684\u7fa9\u5de5\u3002\u96d6\u7136\u66fe\u7d93\u807d\u8aaa\u904e\u6cd5\u754c\u4f5b\u6559\u5927\u5b78\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u5f9e\u672a\u771f\u6b63\u95dc\u6ce8\u904e\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u89ba\u5f97\u9019\u4e0d\u9069\u5408\u6211\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I thought that at my age I would never ever go back to school, leave alone study Buddhism of all things; especially with the circumstances in my life. Boy, did that thought vanish quickly after I saw that Six Perfections<\/em> text.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u66fe\u7d93\u8a8d\u70ba\u81ea\u5df1\u5e74\u7d00\u9019\u9ebc\u5927\u4e86\uff0c\u7d55\u5c0d\u4e0d\u6703\u518d\u56de\u5230\u5b78\u6821\uff0c\u66f4\u4e0d\u7528\u8aaa\u5b78\u7fd2\u4f5b\u6cd5\u4e86\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u5728\u6211\u7576\u6642\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u74b0\u5883\u4e0b\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u7576\u6211\u770b\u5230\u300a\u516d\u5ea6\u6ce2\u7f85\u871c\u300b\u6642\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u60f3\u6cd5\u5f88\u5feb\u5c31\u6d88\u5931\u4e86\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Hence, I must say that my encounter with the Six Paramitas was what prompted me to apply for DRBU\u2019s master program; it was what prompted me to become a student again, at my age, studying Buddhism of all things, in spite of the conditions I was facing in my life at that time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u8aaa\uff0c\u8207\u300a\u516d\u5ea6\u6ce2\u7f85\u871c\u300b\u76f8\u9047\u662f\u4fc3\u4f7f\u6211\u7533\u8acb\u6cd5\u5927\u78a9\u58eb\u8ab2\u7a0b\u7684\u539f\u56e0\uff1b\u5b83\u4fc3\u4f7f\u6211\u518d\u6b21\u6210\u70ba\u5b78\u751f\uff0c\u5b78\u7fd2\u4f5b\u6cd5\uff0c\u5118\u7ba1\u7576\u6642\u6211\u9762\u81e8\u7684\u689d\u4ef6\u5f88\u8271\u96e3\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application process was so swift that the next thing I knew I was sitting in my very first official Dharma class with my amazing Dharma Professors and amazing cohorts. I felt extremely blessed and still feel extremely blessed to be able to learn Dharma surrounded by such a Dharma supportive environment and be connected to such an inspired and devoted Dharma community.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7533\u8acb\u904e\u7a0b\u975e\u5e38\u8fc5\u901f\uff0c\u4e0d\u4e45\u6211\u5c31\u5750\u5728\u4e86\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u5802\u6b63\u5f0f\u7684\u4f5b\u6cd5\u8ab2\u4e0a\uff0c\u8207\u6211\u7684\u512a\u79c0\u4f5b\u6cd5\u6559\u6388\u548c\u540c\u5b78\u5011\u4e00\u8d77\u3002\u6211\u611f\u5230\u975e\u5e38\u5e78\u904b\uff0c\u80fd\u5920\u5728\u9019\u6a23\u4e00\u500b\u8b77\u6301\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7684\u74b0\u5883\u4e2d\u5b78\u7fd2\uff0c\u4e26\u7f6e\u8eab\u65bc\u5bcc\u6709\u555f\u767c\u6027\u53c8\u8654\u8aa0\u7684\u4f5b\u6559\u5927\u5bb6\u5ead\u88e1\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I feel very fortunate to have taken all the classes that I had taken at DRBU. All the classes were amazing. Needless to say, I appreciate all the discourses and loved every single minute of my time at DRBU.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u611f\u5230\u975e\u5e38\u5e78\u904b\uff0c\u80fd\u5920\u5728\u6cd5\u5927\u4fee\u5b8c\u6240\u6709\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3002\u6240\u6709\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u90fd\u975e\u5e38\u7cbe\u5f69\u3002\u7121\u9700\u591a\u8aaa\uff0c\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u559c\u6b61\u6240\u6709\u7684\u8ab2\u5802\u8a0e\u8ad6\uff0c\u4eab\u53d7\u4e86\u5728\u6cd5\u5927\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u5206\u9418\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every sutra and sastra text I have studied or encountered throughout this program is like a door to a stupendously phenomenal dimension. The more I learn about the S<\/em>hurangama Sutra, the Samdhinirmocana Sutra,<\/em> the Yogacara, and all the other texts, the more confusion I get but the more I love it and want to delve deep into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u5728\u6cd5\u5927\u78a9\u58eb\u73ed\u5b78\u7fd2\u6216\u9047\u5230\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u90e8\u7d93\uff0c\u90fd\u50cf\u662f\u901a\u5f80\u975e\u51e1\u7dad\u5ea6\u7684\u5927\u9580\u3002\u6211\u5c0d\u300a\u695e\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u3001\u300a\u89e3\u6df1\u5bc6\u7d93\u300b\u3001\u552f\u8b58\u3001\u4ee5\u53ca\u5176\u4ed6\u6240\u6709\u7d93\u5178\u7684\u5b78\u7fd2\u8d8a\u591a\uff0c\u611f\u5230\u7684\u56f0\u60d1\u8d8a\u591a\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u4e5f\u8d8a\u52a0\u71b1\u611b\uff0c\u4e26\u5e0c\u671b\u6df1\u5165\u63a2\u7a76\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Being a newbie to Buddhism, everything about this subject was so new yet invigorating to me. I felt like I was reborn as a person. Even though the learning curve was steep for me, I feel like I have learned so much and in turn have grown from these teachings both spiritually and pragmatically as a human being. To use a familiar description from sutra text, I feel like I have lucked out and have arrived upon a \u2018mountain of jewels\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f5c\u70ba\u4e00\u500b\u4f5b\u6559\u521d\u5b78\u8005\uff0c\u6240\u6709\u95dc\u65bc\u4f5b\u6559\u7684\u9ede\u9ede\u6ef4\u6ef4\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u90fd\u662f\u5982\u6b64\u65b0\u9bae\u4e14\u4ee4\u4eba\u632f\u596e\u3002\u6211\u611f\u5230\u81ea\u5df1\u50cf\u662f\u91cd\u751f\u4e86\u3002\u5118\u7ba1\u5b78\u7fd2\u904e\u7a0b\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u5f88\u9661\u5ced\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u611f\u5230\u81ea\u5df1\u5b78\u5230\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\uff0c\u4e26\u5f9e\u9019\u4e9b\u6559\u7fa9\u4e2d\uff0c\u5728\u7cbe\u795e\u4e0a\u548c\u5be6\u969b\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u90fd\u7372\u5f97\u4e86\u6210\u9577\u3002\u7528\u7d93\u5178\u7684\u63cf\u8ff0\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u81ea\u5df1\u5e78\u904b\u5730\u627e\u5230\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7\u300c \u5bf6\u5c71\u300d\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I tried my best to pick up as many jewels as my capabilities permit. One of the jewels I was determined to ascertain is the Six Paramitas. I guess that would be six jewels and not just one. Yes, I consider myself very lucky to be able to learn more about the Six Paramitas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u76e1\u6211\u6240\u80fd\u5730\u53bb\u62fe\u53d6\u76e1\u53ef\u80fd\u591a\u7684\u5bf6\u8c9d\u3002\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u500b\u6211\u6c7a\u5fc3\u8981\u5f97\u5230\u7684\u5bf6\u8c9d\u5c31\u662f\u516d\u5ea6\u6ce2\u7f85\u871c\u3002\u6211\u60f3\u9019\u5c07\u662f\u516d\u9846\u5bf6\u8c9d\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u50c5\u50c5\u662f\u4e00\u9846\u3002\u662f\u7684\uff0c\u6211\u8a8d\u70ba\u81ea\u5df1\u975e\u5e38\u5e78\u904b\uff0c\u80fd\u5920\u5b78\u7fd2\u66f4\u591a\u95dc\u65bc\u516d\u5ea6\u6ce2\u7f85\u871c\u7684\u77e5\u8b58\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

To discover how the 12 links of dependent origination serve as both the underlying habitual algorithmic pattern and path that ushers us into our perpetual samsaric existence was deeply insightful for me. It is so enlightening to uncover the mechanism and function of the eight consciousnesses and how they dominate the driver’s seat in our minds and in turn our lives.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u767c\u73fe\u5341\u4e8c\u56e0\u7de3\u5982\u4f55\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u5728\u516d\u9053\u8f2a\u8ff4\u982d\u51fa\u982d\u6c92\u7684\u6a21\u5f0f\u548c\u8def\u5f91\uff0c\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u662f\u6975\u5177\u555f\u767c\u6027\u7684\u3002\u63ed\u793a\u516b\u8b58\u7684\u6a5f\u5236\u548c\u529f\u80fd\u4ee5\u53ca\u516b\u8b58\u5982\u4f55\u4e3b\u5c0e\u6211\u5011\u7684\u601d\u60f3\uff0c\u9032\u800c\u5f71\u97ff\u6211\u5011\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\uff0c\u771f\u662f\u975e\u5e38\u555f\u767c\u4eba\u5fc3\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I found that the understanding of the 3 natures, \u2014that is the imaginary nature, dependent nature, and the perfect nature\u2014 unveils the mystery of nonduality also known as the Middle Way. The unsurpassed profundity of the doctrine of nonduality is utterly ineffable. I used to get frustrated when people tell me that everything is empty without explaining why it is empty. But now that I have come to understand the ultimate meaning of emptiness from the lens of Buddhism and cultivation I contemplate and rejoice whenever I come across the word \u2018emptiness\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u767c\u73fe\u5c0d\u4e09\u6027\u2014\u2014\u5373\u904d\u8a08\u6240\u57f7\u6027\u3001\u4f9d\u4ed6\u8d77\u6027\u3001\u5713\u6210\u5be6\u6027\u2014\u2014\u7684\u7406\u89e3\u89e3\u958b\u4e86\u4e0d\u4e8c\u8ad6\uff0c\u53c8\u7a31\u4e2d\u9053\u4e4b\u8b0e\u3002\u00a0 \u4e2d\u9053\u7684\u7121\u6bd4\u6df1\u5967\u662f\u96e3\u4ee5\u8a00\u55bb\u7684\u3002\u6211\u66fe\u5c0d\u4eba\u5011\u8aaa\u4e00\u5207\u7686\u7a7a\u4f46\u6c92\u6709\u89e3\u91cb\u70ba\u4f55\u7a7a\u611f\u5230\u6cae\u55aa\u3002\u4f46\u73fe\u5728\uff0c\u00a0 \u6211\u5f9e\u4f5b\u6559\u548c\u4fee\u884c\u7684\u89d2\u5ea6\u7406\u89e3\u4e86\u300c\u7a7a\u300d\u7684\u7d42\u6975\u610f\u7fa9\uff0c\u6211\u5c0d\u300c\u7a7a\u300d\u9019\u500b\u5b57\u5145\u6eff\u4e86\u601d\u8003\u548c\u559c\u6085\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I reflect on what I have learned; that is, emptiness is not about nothingness. Our inherent or fundamental nature is not empty yet it is also not non-empty. \u201cThere is no \u2018is\u2019 and there is no \u2018is not\u2019\u201d is one of the favorite lines I have come across amongst the sutra and sastra texts I have studied. The discovery of the jewel of non-duality is an immeasurable gift of inspiration, joy, and peace. It bestows the sense that \u2018everything is ok,\u2019 using the words of Master Hua.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u53cd\u601d\u6211\u6240\u5b78\u5230\u7684\uff0c\u7a7a\u4e26\u975e\u4ec0\u9ebc\u4e5f\u6c92\u6709\u3002\u6211\u5011\u7684\u56fa\u6709\u6216\u6839\u672c\u6027\u8cea\u65e2\u975e\u7a7a\u4e5f\u975e\u975e\u7a7a\u3002 \u300c\u7121\u300e\u6709\u300f\u7121\u300e\u6c92\u6709\u300f\u300d\u662f\u6211\u5728\u6240\u5b78\u7d93\u8ad6\u4e2d\u6700\u559c\u6b61\u7684\u53e5\u5b50\u4e4b\u4e00\u3002\u767c\u73fe\u4e0d\u4e8c\u8ad6\u7684\u5bf6\u8c9d\u662f\u7121\u91cf\u7684\u9748\u611f\u3001\u559c\u6085\u8207\u7965\u548c\u7684\u79ae\u7269\u3002\u7528\u4e0a\u4eba\u7684\u8a71\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u5b83\u8ce6\u4e88\u4e86\u300c\u600e\u6a23\u90fd\u5f88\u597d\u300d\u7684\u611f\u89ba\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

By now I am certain you have sensed my enthusiasm for studying sutras. Studying Dharma texts is extremely important for me, but I realized that studying alone is not enough for my cultivation to progress. I know I must strive to instill in me the teachings I have learned from the Buddha. As the saying goes, actions speak louder than words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u73fe\u5728\uff0c\u6211\u76f8\u4fe1\u4f60\u5011\u5df2\u7d93\u611f\u53d7\u5230\u6211\u5c0d\u5b78\u7fd2\u7d93\u5178\u7684\u71b1\u60c5\u3002\u5b78\u7fd2\u4f5b\u6559\u7d93\u5178\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u975e\u5e38\u91cd\u8981\uff0c\u4f46\u6211\u610f\u8b58\u5230\u5149\u662f\u5b78\u7fd2\u9084\u4e0d\u8db3\u4ee5\u8b93\u6211\u4fee\u884c\u9032\u6b65\u3002\u6211\u77e5\u9053\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u52aa\u529b\u5c07\u5f9e\u4f5b\u9640\u90a3\u88e1\u5b78\u5230\u7684\u6559\u7fa9\u878d\u5165\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u3002\u6b63\u5982\u4fd7\u8a71\u6240\u8aaa\uff0c\u884c\u52d5\u52dd\u65bc\u8a00\u8a9e\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

With that said, one of the most important things I\u2019ve learned at DRBU is about taking vows. This is a topic that I fear the most because since childhood I was taught not to make promises I can\u2019t keep. However, in order to keep my cultivation moving forward I know I must get over this fear of mine. So I took the plunge. A few years back I took the five precepts then a few weeks ago I took the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8a71\u96d6\u5982\u6b64\uff0c\u6211\u5728\u6cd5\u5927\u5b78\u5230\u7684\u6700\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e8b\u5c31\u662f\u767c\u9858\u3002\u9019\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u6211\u6700\u5bb3\u6015\u7684\u4e3b\u984c\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5f9e\u5c0f\u6211\u5c31\u88ab\u6559\u5c0e\u4e0d\u8981\u505a\u4e0d\u80fd\u5be6\u73fe\u7684\u627f\u8afe\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u70ba\u4e86\u8b93\u6211\u7684\u4fee\u884c\u7e7c\u7e8c\u5411\u524d\u767c\u5c55\uff0c\u6211\u77e5\u9053\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u514b\u670d\u9019\u500b\u6050\u61fc\u3002\u56e0\u6b64\uff0c\u6211\u52c7\u6562\u5730\u505a\u51fa\u4e86\u6c7a\u5b9a\u3002\u5e7e\u5e74\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u53d7\u4e86\u4e94\u6212\uff0c\u5e7e\u9031\u524d\u6211\u53d7\u4e86\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Before I speak briefly about my experience with the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts Transmission, I want to sincerely express my appreciation to each and everyone who were involved in helping to make the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts Transmission a success. I am grateful to all the Great Buddhas, Great Bodhisattvas, Master Hua and the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas for having set the Dharma foundation to allow for this transmission to take place.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u6211\u7c21\u8981\u8ac7\u8ac7\u6211\u5c0d\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u50b3\u6388\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u8877\u5fc3\u5730\u611f\u8b1d\u8b77\u6301\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u50b3\u6388\u5713\u6eff\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\u3002\u6211\u611f\u6fc0\u8af8\u4f5b\u83e9\u85a9\u3001\u4e0a\u4eba\u548c\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\uff0c\u611f\u6069\u60a8\u5011\u70ba\u9019\u6b21\u50b3\u6388\u5960\u5b9a\u4e86\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7684\u57fa\u790e\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u611f\u8b1d\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u59d4\u54e1\u6703\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u4f4d\u6210\u54e1\uff0c\u611f\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u8209\u8fa6\u4e86\u9019\u6b21\u7684\u50b3\u6212\u3002\u611f\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u7684\u8f9b\u52e4\u5de5\u4f5c\u548c\u5949\u737b\uff0c\u78ba\u4fdd\u50b3\u6212\u7684\u9806\u5229\u9032\u884c\u3002\u611f\u8b1d\u6240\u6709\u7684\u6388\u8ab2\u6cd5\u5e2b\u548c\u7ffb\u8b6f\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5011\uff0c\u611f\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u4ed8\u51fa\u6642\u9593\u548c\u7cbe\u529b\u5e36\u4f86\u6e05\u6670\u7684\u89e3\u91cb\u3002\u6211\u611f\u8b1d\u6240\u6709\u7684\u77e5\u5ba2\u7d44\u5de5\u4f5c\u4eba\u54e1\uff0c\u611f\u8b1d\u4f60\u5011\u5b89\u6392\u98df\u5bbf\u3002\u611f\u8b1d\u5eda\u623f\u5718\u968a\u63d0\u4f9b\u7684\u7f8e\u5473\u98df\u7269\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Last but not least, I am grateful to the covid team for doing such a wonderful job in mitigating the covid situation. I must admit, before receiving the notification from the Lay Bodhisattva Precept Committee about self-covid testing being required upon arriving at CTTB, I was worried about participating in this event mainly due to covid. I was relieved to learn that CTTB requires all participants in the event to be tested for covid. I was impressed at the level of measures the covid team had put forth in ensuring that each and everyone is tested multiple times to minimize the spread of the virus. Great job covid team!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6700\u5f8c\u4f46\u540c\u6a23\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u6211\u611f\u8b1d\u75ab\u60c5\u9632\u63a7\u5718\u968a\u5728\u6e1b\u5c11\u75ab\u60c5\u5f71\u97ff\u65b9\u9762\u6240\u505a\u7684\u51fa\u8272\u5de5\u4f5c\u3002\u6211\u5fc5\u9808\u627f\u8a8d\uff0c\u5728\u6536\u5230\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u59d4\u54e1\u6703\u901a\u77e5\u9700\u8981\u5230\u9054\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u5f8c\u81ea\u6e2c\u65b0\u51a0\u7684\u8981\u6c42\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u4e3b\u8981\u64d4\u5fc3\u7684\u662f\u65b0\u51a0\u5c0d\u9019\u6b21\u50b3\u6212\u7684\u5f71\u97ff\u3002\u5f97\u77e5\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u8981\u6c42\u6240\u6709\u6212\u5b50\u90fd\u9032\u884c\u65b0\u51a0\u6aa2\u6e2c\u5f8c\uff0c \u6211\u611f\u5230\u5982\u91cb\u91cd\u8ca0\u3002\u6211\u5c0d\u75ab\u60c5\u9632\u63a7\u5718\u968a\u6240\u63a1\u53d6\u7684\u591a\u6b21\u6aa2\u6e2c\u63aa\u65bd\uff0c\u4ee5\u907f\u514d\u75c5\u6bd2\u50b3\u64ad\u7684\u52aa\u529b\u5370\u8c61\u6df1\u523b\u3002\u75ab\u60c5\u9632\u63a7\u5718\u968a\uff0c\u4f60\u5011\u505a\u5f97\u975e\u5e38\u597d\uff01<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now a brief note on my Lay Bodhisattva Precepts Transmission experience. One of the things that left a deep impression on me throughout the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts Transmission was the confession interview. I couldn\u2019t believe that each and every preceptees\u2014all three hundred and plus of us\u2014were given the chance to confess our precept violations to a Dharma master in person.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The amount of patience, time, and commitment the Dharma Masters showed by listening to each and everyone\u2019s confession was thoroughly poignant to say the least. To me this specific segment of the transmission coupled with the physical-in-person classes absolutely highlights the gravity of the Lay Bodhisattva Precepts Transmission. It categorically cements the significance of this transmission.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5011\u807d\u53d6\u6bcf\u500b\u4eba\u7684\u61fa\u6094\u6240\u5c55\u73fe\u51fa\u7684\u8010\u5fc3\u3001\u6642\u9593\u548c\u627f\u8afe\uff0c\u6df1\u6df1\u6253\u52d5\u4e86\u6211\u3002\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u9019\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u7684\u50b3\u6388\u8207\u9762\u5c0d\u9762\u7684\u8ab2\u7a0b\u7d50\u5408\uff0c\u5145\u5206\u7a81\u986f\u4e86\u5728\u5bb6\u83e9\u85a9\u6212\u50b3\u6388\u7684\u91cd\u8981\u6027\uff0c\u78ba\u7acb\u4e86\u9019\u6b21\u50b3\u6388\u7684\u610f\u7fa9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the confession alone does not eradicate the karmic retributions and penalties for violating the precepts, it allowed me to get the violations off my chest, figuratively speaking, and help lighten my conscience. In a way the confession allows me to start my lay bodhisattva precepts journey on a positive and somewhat clean slate. This opportunity to confess is absolutely invaluable. I am aware that my offenses have not been eradicated just from a mere confession.
