All Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Venerable Master Hua, Dharma Masters, and all Good and Wise Advisors, Amitabha! I am Monica and it is my honor to tie dharma affinities with everyone. In the past three weeks, I\u2019ve attended Sudhana Retreat and Buddha Root Farm Retreat. It has been an enriching and nurturing experience, and there is a lot more to digest and process. So, I would like to use this opportunity to organize my thoughts and share some of my reflections with you all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8af8<\/strong>\u4f5b\u83e9<\/strong>\u85a9\u3001<\/strong>\u5ba3\u516c\u4e0a\u4eba\u3001<\/strong>\u8af8<\/strong>\u4f4d\u6cd5<\/strong>\u5e2b\u3001<\/strong>\u5584\u77e5<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\uff0c\u963f\u5f4c\u9640\u4f5b\uff01\u6211\u662f<\/strong>Monica<\/strong>\uff08\u9b4f\u85dd\u83f2\uff09<\/strong>\uff0c\u975e\u5e38\u69ae\u5e78\u80fd\u6709<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b\u6a5f\u6703\u548c\u5927\u5bb6<\/strong>\u7d50<\/strong>\u6cd5<\/strong>\u7de3\u3002\u9019<\/strong>\u4e09\u5468\u88cf\uff0c\u6211\u53c3\u52a0\u4e86\u5584<\/strong>\u8ca1<\/strong>\u53c3\u5b78\u4e2d\u5fc3<\/strong>\u4e03\u5929\u79aa\u4fee<\/strong>\u71df<\/strong>\u548c\u4f5b\u6839\u5730\u79aa\u4fee<\/strong>\u71df<\/strong>\uff0c<\/strong>\u5c0d<\/strong>\u6211\u4f86<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\u662f\u4e00\u6b21\u975e\u5e38\u5145<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u4e14\u6ecb\u990a\u5fc3\u9748\u7684<\/strong>\u7d93\u6b77<\/strong>\uff0c\u88cf\u9762\u7684\u5167\u5bb9<\/strong>\u9084<\/strong>\u9700\u8981\u6162\u6162\u6d88\u5316\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u501f<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b\u6a5f\u6703\u6574\u7406\u4e00\u4e0b\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u601d\u8def\uff0c\u4e5f\u8ddf\u5927\u5bb6\u5206\u4eab\u4e00\u4e9b\u5fc3\u5f97\u9ad4\u6703\u3002<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

<\/p>\n\n\n

I firstly attended the Sudhana Retreat and this year, the theme is quantum mechanics and Yog\u0101c\u0101ra. At first sight, these two topics seem to be irrelevant to each other—one is  <\/s>cutting edge science while the other is Buddhist philosophy. Oftentimes, when we think of science, we are reminded of its materialistic perspective that the world is made of matters only, whereas Buddhism, especially Yog\u0101c\u0101ra, emphasizes the role of consciousness. So, how do these two seemingly contradicting perspectives fit together? Interestingly enough, the study of quantum mechanics actually breaks the conventional materialistic confine of classical physics, thus, serves as a bridge between the scientific world and the Buddhist reality.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u9996\u5148\u53c3\u52a0\u7684\u662f\u5584<\/strong>\u8ca1<\/strong>\u4e2d\u5fc3<\/strong>\u79aa\u4fee<\/strong>\u71df<\/strong>\uff0c\u4eca\u5e74\u7684\u4e3b<\/strong>\u984c<\/strong>\u662f<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u91cf\u5b50\u529b\u5b78\u8207\u552f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u5b78<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u3002<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u5169\u500b\u807d\u8d77\u4f86\u516b\u7aff\u5b50\u6253\u4e0d\u8457\u7684<\/strong>\u9818<\/strong>\u57df<\/strong>\u2014\u2014<\/strong>\u4e00\u500b\u662f<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u4ee3\u79d1\u5b78\u5c16\u7aef\uff0c\u4e00\u500b\u662f\u4f5b\u6559\u54f2\u5b78\u601d\u60f3<\/strong>\u2014\u2014<\/strong>\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u6709\u8457\u5f88\u6709\u610f\u601d\u7684\u4ea4\u96c6\u3002\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u901a\u5e38\u6703\u628a\u79d1\u5b78\u548c\u552f\u7269\u4e3b<\/strong>\u7fa9\u806f<\/strong>\u7e6b\u5728\u4e00\u8d77\uff0c<\/strong>\u8a8d\u70ba<\/strong>\u4e00\u5207\u90fd\u662f\u7269<\/strong>\u8cea<\/strong>\u69cb\u6210\u7684\uff1b\u800c\u4f5b\u6559\uff0c\u5c24\u5176\u662f\u552f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u5b78\uff0c<\/strong>\u5f37\u8abf<\/strong>\u7684\u662f\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u7684\u4f5c\u7528\u3002<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u5169\u500b<\/strong>\u89c0<\/strong>\u9ede\u770b\u4f3c\u77db\u76fe\uff0c\u4f46\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u91cf\u5b50\u529b\u5b78\u6b63\u597d\u6253\u7834\u4e86<\/strong>\u50b3\u7d71<\/strong>\u7269\u7406\u4e2d\u90a3\u7a2e\u6a5f\u68b0\u552f\u7269\u7684\u6846\u67b6\uff0c\u5728\u67d0\u7a2e\u7a0b\u5ea6\u4e0a\uff0c\u53cd\u800c<\/strong>\u70ba<\/strong>\u79d1\u5b78\u4e16\u754c\u8207\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u642d\u8d77\u4e86\u4e00\u5ea7<\/strong>\u6a4b<\/strong>\u6a11\u3002<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

But before we dive into quantum mechanics, we could spend some time thinking over the similarity between science and Buddhism. Despite the different attitude toward consciousness, at certain levels, both science and Buddhism can be seen as a construct to explain reality, striving to understand the truth. In fact, a famous scientist says that science is a study of the cause and effect of the natural world. For instance, Newton experienced the phenomena of an apple falling down to his head, he started to ponder the reasons or the causes behind this effect. Similarly, Buddhism offers a complicated system of karma to explain the causes and effects of all phenomena, which is broader than the mere materialistic world. Even though most scientists deny consciousness and any other spiritual aspect of existence, it doesn\u2019t mean they don\u2019t exist, but only because those aspects are beyond the materialistic measurement which is the only measurement they have developed. Therefore, they are not comfortable with things beyond their measure, which is a natural human tendency—we do not like things that are out of our control, and we usually deny those things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f46\u5728\u6df1\u5165\u63a2<\/strong>\u8a0e<\/strong>\u91cf\u5b50\u529b\u5b78\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u53ef\u4ee5\u5148\u82b1\u9ede<\/strong>\u6642\u9593<\/strong>\u601d\u8003\u4e00\u4e0b\uff0c\u79d1\u5b78\u8207\u4f5b\u6559\u4e4b<\/strong>\u9593<\/strong>\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u4e5f\u6709\u67d0\u4e9b\u5171\u901a\u4e4b<\/strong>\u8655\u3002<\/strong>\u5118\u7ba1\u5169\u8005<\/strong>\u5c0d<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u7684<\/strong>\u614b<\/strong>\u5ea6\u4e0d\u540c\uff0c\u4f46\u5728\u67d0\u500b<\/strong>\u5c64<\/strong>\u9762\u4e0a\uff0c\u79d1\u5b78\u548c\u4f5b\u6559\u90fd\u53ef\u4ee5\u88ab<\/strong>\u8996\u70ba<\/strong>\u89e3<\/strong>\u91cb\u73fe\u5be6<\/strong>\u7684\u7cfb<\/strong>\u7d71<\/strong>\uff0c\u90fd\u662f\u5728\u63a2\u7d22\u771f\u7406\u7684\u9053\u8def\u4e0a\u524d\u884c\u3002\u4e8b<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u4e0a\uff0c\u6709\u4f4d\u8457\u540d\u79d1\u5b78\u5bb6\u66fe<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\uff0c\u79d1\u5b78\u662f\u7814\u7a76\u81ea\u7136\u754c\u56e0\u679c\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u5b78<\/strong>\u554f\u3002<\/strong>\u6bd4\u5982\u725b<\/strong>\u9813<\/strong>\u88ab\u860b\u679c<\/strong>\u7838<\/strong>\u5230\u5f8c\uff0c\u4e0d\u53ea\u662f\u63a5\u53d7<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u8c61\u672c\u8eab\uff0c\u800c\u662f<\/strong>\u9032<\/strong>\u4e00\u6b65\u63a2<\/strong>\u8a0e<\/strong>\u80cc\u5f8c\u7684\u56e0\u548c<\/strong>\u7de3\u3002\u985e<\/strong>\u4f3c\u5730\uff0c\u4f5b\u6559\u7528<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u696d<\/strong>\u529b<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u7cfb<\/strong>\u7d71<\/strong>\u4f86\u89e3<\/strong>\u91cb<\/strong>\u4e00\u5207<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u8c61\u7684\u56e0\u679c\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b\u7cfb<\/strong>\u7d71<\/strong>\u6bd4<\/strong>\u7d14<\/strong>\u7cb9\u7269<\/strong>\u8cea<\/strong>\u4e16\u754c<\/strong>\u9084<\/strong>\u8981\u5ee3<\/strong>\u95ca\u3002\u96d6<\/strong>\u7136\u5927\u591a\u6578\u79d1\u5b78\u5bb6\u5426<\/strong>\u8a8d<\/strong>\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u6216\u7cbe\u795e<\/strong>\u5c64<\/strong>\u9762\u7684\u5b58\u5728\uff0c\u4f46<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u53ea\u662f\u56e0<\/strong>\u70ba<\/strong>\u5b83<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u8d85\u51fa\u4e86\u7576\u524d\u79d1\u5b78\u80fd<\/strong>\u6e2c<\/strong>\u91cf\u7684\u7bc4\u7587\uff0c\u4e26\u4e0d\u8868\u793a\u5b83<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4e0d\u5b58\u5728\u3002<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u4e5f\u53cd\u6620\u51fa\u4eba<\/strong>\u985e<\/strong>\u7684<\/strong>\u50be<\/strong>\u5411\uff1a\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4e0d\u559c<\/strong>\u6b61<\/strong>\u7121\u6cd5\u638c\u63a7\u7684<\/strong>\u6771<\/strong>\u897f\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u5f80\u5f80\u6703\u5426<\/strong>\u8a8d<\/strong>\u5b83\u3002<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moreover, the methodology scientists develop to investigate the cause and effect corresponds to the Buddhist approach. Scientific method starts with observation of the physical world, for example, an apple falling down. Then scientists come up with some hypothesis to explain the observation—in the same example, Newton proposed the law of gravity. In order to find out the trustability of the hypothesis, they design countless experiments to test it out. If the results are repeatedly the same, and are applicable to explain all relevant phenomena, then the hypothesis becomes a reliable theory until novelty appears and shifts or modifies the current paradigm. So, science in general is not a truth by itself, but an interpretation of reality that makes sense to people. From that regard, Buddhism is interestingly scientific. When Buddha awakens to the ultimate reality, he expounds the Dharma to help all sentient beings to be awakened. And all the great masters and patriarchs followed his teaching and got awakened. Yet, for us as  <\/s>followers of Buddha, until we actually experience the great awakening, the Buddha\u2019s teachings remain as a hypothesis to experiment with and test out. So, in the K\u0101l\u0101ma <\/em>S<\/em>ut<\/em>t<\/em>a<\/em>, one of the texts in the P\u0101li Canon, Buddha suggests, \u201cNow, K\u0101l\u0101mas, don\u2019t go by reports, by legends, by traditions, by scripture, by logical conjecture, by inference, by analogies, by agreement through pondering views, by probability, or by the thought, \u2018This contemplative is our teacher.\u2019 When you know for yourselves that, \u2018These qualities are skillful; these qualities are blameless; these qualities are praised by the wise; these qualities, when adopted and carried out, lead to welfare and to happiness\u2019\u2014then you should enter and remain in them.\u201d For any teaching, one must not blindly believe in it, instead, one should carefully examine the principle behind and test it out.                                           <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6b64\u5916\uff0c\u79d1\u5b78\u5bb6\u7528\u4f86\u7814\u7a76\u56e0\u679c\u95dc\u4fc2\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\uff0c\u4e5f\u8207\u4f5b\u6559\u7684<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u8e10\u65b9\u5f0f\u5341\u5206\u76f8\u4f3c\u3002\u79d1\u5b78\u5f9e<\/strong>\u89c0<\/strong>\u5bdf\u81ea\u7136<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u8c61\u958b\u59cb\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\u860b\u679c\u6389\u843d\uff0c\u7136\u5f8c\u63d0\u51fa\u5047<\/strong>\u8a2d<\/strong>\u4f86\u89e3<\/strong>\u91cb\u9019<\/strong>\u500b<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u8c61\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u842c\u6709\u5f15<\/strong>\u529b<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u3002\u63a5\u8457\uff0c\u901a<\/strong>\u904e<\/strong>\u53cd<\/strong>\u8986<\/strong>\u5be6\u9a57<\/strong>\uff0c<\/strong>\u9a57\u8b49<\/strong>\u5047<\/strong>\u8a2d<\/strong>\u662f\u5426\u53ef\u9760\u3002\u5982\u679c<\/strong>\u7d50<\/strong>\u679c\u4e00\u518d\u91cd\u8907\uff0c\u4e26\u80fd\u89e3<\/strong>\u91cb\u985e<\/strong>\u4f3c<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u8c61\uff0c\u90a3\u5b83\u5c31<\/strong>\u8b8a<\/strong>\u6210\u4e00\u500b\u88ab\u63a5\u53d7\u7684\u7406<\/strong>\u8ad6<\/strong>\uff0c\u76f4\u5230\u65b0\u7684<\/strong>\u767c\u73fe<\/strong>\u51fa<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\uff0c<\/strong>\u5c0d<\/strong>\u5176<\/strong>\u9032<\/strong>\u884c\u4fee\u6b63\u3002\u540c<\/strong>\u6a23<\/strong>\u5730\uff0c\u4f5b\u9640<\/strong>\u89ba<\/strong>\u609f\u5f8c\u6240<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\u7684\u6cd5\uff0c\u4e5f\u662f\u5f8c\u4e16\u5f1f\u5b50\u9010\u6b65<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u8e10\u3001\u9ad4<\/strong>\u9a57\u3001<\/strong>\u5370<\/strong>\u8b49<\/strong>\u7684\u3002<\/strong>\u5c0d<\/strong>\u65bc\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u800c\u8a00\uff0c\u4f5b\u9640\u7684\u6559\u6cd5\u5982\u679c\u5c1a\u672a<\/strong>\u89aa\u8b49<\/strong>\uff0c\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u4e5f<\/strong>\u9084<\/strong>\u53ea\u662f\u4e00\u500b<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u5047<\/strong>\u8a2d<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\uff0c\u9700\u8981\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u53bb<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u8e10\u548c<\/strong>\u9a57\u8b49\u3002<\/strong>\u6b63\u5982\u300a\u5361\u62c9<\/strong>\u746a\u7d93\u300b<\/strong>\u4e2d\u4f5b\u9640\u6240<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\uff1a\u4e0d\u8981\u56e0<\/strong>\u70ba\u50b3\u7d71\u3001\u7d93<\/strong>\u5178\u3001<\/strong>\u908f\u8f2f\u3001<\/strong>\u63a8\u7406\u3001\u540d<\/strong>\u5e2b<\/strong>\u7b49\u7b49\u5c31\u53bb\u76f2\u4fe1\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e8b\uff0c\u800c<\/strong>\u61c9<\/strong>\u7576\u81ea\u5df1\u53bb\u9ad4\u6703\uff1a<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u4e9b\u6cd5\u662f\u5426\u5584\u5de7\uff1f\u662f\u5426\u7121\u5bb3\uff1f\u662f\u5426\u88ab\u667a\u8005\u6240\u7a31<\/strong>\u8b9a\uff1f<\/strong>\u662f\u5426\u80fd<\/strong>\u5e36<\/strong>\u4f86\u5b89<\/strong>\u6a02\uff1f<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u5982\u679c\u662f\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31<\/strong>\u503c<\/strong>\u5f97\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4fee\u5b78\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The implication of this teaching is profound. It does not imply that we as cultivators should have doubts when we practice. Rather, the faith required in the process of cultivating, especially in the initial state, is the confidence or willingness to test the theory out in our own experience, thus wholeheartedly commit to the practice. In fact, the only reference point we have is the existential experience right now in the present mind ground. Buddhist teachings, from that regard, is an experiment in the mental lab-the mind ground, and each individual can work only in their own mind ground but not others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Therefore, Buddhism is not superego, meaning that it is not something that the society, culture, even religion superimpose on us as a cage confining us and judging us all the time. Yet many people just take Buddha\u2019s teaching as some sort of social norm—if we follow it, then we are good people, but if not, we are bad people. However, Buddha doesn\u2019t judge people as morally good or bad. When he mentioned wholesome karma versus unwholesome karma, he didn\u2019t mean it as a moral categorization. All he is concerned about is whether we are suffering or not, and wholesome karma leads to liberation, whereas unwholesome karma leads to affliction. Far from judging sentient beings as good or bad, Buddha sees all sentient beings as potential Buddhas with inherent illuminating Buddha nature. The reason why we couldn\u2019t realize our nature is that we are confused and afflicted by all the narratives and projections we made up that covered our bright nature. As Shurangama Sutra<\/em> says, our ignorance initiates from adding understanding on top of understanding which penetrates through all levels of our current experience, so, if we can gradually remove all the \u201cadded understanding\u201d the self created, nature will reveal itself. Thus, Master Hua said that he is not bringing Chinese Buddhism or any \u201cisms\u201d to the West, he is bringing humans back to their human nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9019<\/strong>\u6bb5\u6559<\/strong>\u5c0e<\/strong>\u7684\u542b<\/strong>\u7fa9<\/strong>\u975e\u5e38\u6df1<\/strong>\u9060\u3002<\/strong>\u5b83\u4e26\u4e0d\u662f<\/strong>\u8b93<\/strong>\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u5728\u4fee\u884c<\/strong>\u6642\u61f7<\/strong>\u7591\u4e00\u5207\uff0c\u800c\u662f<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4fee\u884c\u521d\u671f\u6240\u9700\u8981\u7684\u4fe1\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u9858\u610f<\/strong>\u89aa<\/strong>\u81ea\u53bb\u9ad4<\/strong>\u9a57\u3001<\/strong>\u53bb\u5370<\/strong>\u8b49<\/strong>\u6559\u6cd5\u7684\u4fe1\u5fc3\u3002\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\uff0c\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u8981\u5c07\u4f5b\u6cd5\u7576\u4f5c<\/strong>\u5be6\u9a57<\/strong>\u7406<\/strong>\u8ad6<\/strong>\uff0c\u5728\u81ea\u5df1\u5167\u5fc3\u7684<\/strong>\u5be6\u9a57<\/strong>\u5ba4\u4e2d\u53bb<\/strong>\u5be6\u969b<\/strong>\u64cd\u4f5c\u3002<\/strong>\u5be6\u969b<\/strong>\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u552f\u4e00\u53ef\u9760\u7684\u51fa<\/strong>\u767c<\/strong>\u9ede\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u7576\u4e0b<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u4e00\u5ff5\u7684<\/strong>\u73fe<\/strong>\u524d<\/strong>\u7d93\u9a57\u3002<\/strong>\u5f9e<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b\u89d2\u5ea6\u4f86\u770b\uff0c\u4f5b\u6cd5\u5c31\u662f\u4e00<\/strong>\u9580<\/strong>\u95dc\u65bc<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u5fc3\u5730<\/strong>\u5be6\u9a57<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u7684\u5b78<\/strong>\u554f<\/strong>\uff0c\u800c\u6bcf\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\u90fd\u53ea\u80fd\u5728\u81ea\u5df1<\/strong>\u9019\u584a<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u5fc3\u7530<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u4e0a<\/strong>\u52d5<\/strong>\u624b\uff0c\u7121\u6cd5\u66ff<\/strong>\u5225<\/strong>\u4eba\u8015\u8018\u3002<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

That human nature is right there in our present awareness and in fact, the \u201cmind-only\u201d school by its name, proposes that our current perception of reality is all made from the mind only, and there isn\u2019t a \u201cworld\u201d out there beyond our awareness of it. And actually, there is no way to prove it wrong because any attempt to prove it wrong is already in the process of our consciousness. If we examine it, we will find that every human experience is processed by our mind. In the Avatamsaka Sutra, it says \u201cThe mind is like a skilled artist, capable of painting all worldly phenomena. The five aggregates arise entirely from it; there is nothing it does not create.\u201d Therefore, even though scientists in general deny or avoid talking about consciousness, their denial is a reflection of that consciousness. And interestingly, the study of quantum mechanics breaks their denial and almost forces them to deal with consciousness face to face, though many still don\u2019t admit it or don\u2019t care.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9019<\/strong>\u7a2e<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u4eba\u6027<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\uff0c\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u5c31\u5b58\u5728\u65bc\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u6bcf\u4e00\u5ff5\u7576\u4e0b\u7684<\/strong>\u89ba<\/strong>\u77e5\u4e2d\u3002\u552f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u5b78<\/strong>\u7684\u610f\u601d\u4e5f\u5728\u6b64<\/strong>\u2014\u2014<\/strong>\u4e00\u5207<\/strong>\u73fe\u5be6<\/strong>\u90fd\u662f<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u6240<\/strong>\u8b8a\u3002\u63db<\/strong>\u53e5<\/strong>\u8a71\u8aaa<\/strong>\uff0c\u6211<\/strong>\u5011\u5c0d<\/strong>\u4e16\u754c\u7684\u6240\u6709<\/strong>\u7d93\u9a57<\/strong>\u90fd\u662f\u5fc3<\/strong>\u8b58\u986f\u73fe<\/strong>\u7684<\/strong>\u7d50<\/strong>\u679c\uff0c\u4e26\u6c92\u6709\u4e00\u500b\u96e2\u958b\u6211<\/strong>\u5011\u89ba<\/strong>\u77e5\u800c\u7368\u7acb\u5b58\u5728\u7684\u4e16\u754c\u3002\u800c<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u7a2e<\/strong>\u89c0<\/strong>\u9ede\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u7121\u6cd5\u88ab<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u8b49\u507d<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\uff0c\u56e0<\/strong>\u70ba<\/strong>\u4efb\u4f55<\/strong>\u8a66\u5716<\/strong>\u5426\u5b9a\u5b83\u7684\u884c<\/strong>\u70ba<\/strong>\uff0c\u672c\u8eab\u4e5f\u5df2\u5728\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u4e2d<\/strong>\u767c<\/strong>\u751f\u3002\u6b63\u5982\u300a<\/strong>\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u300b<\/strong>\u6240<\/strong>\u8aaa<\/strong>\uff1a\u300c\u5fc3\u5982\u5de5\u756b<\/strong>\u5e2b<\/strong>\uff0c\u80fd\u756b<\/strong>\u8af8<\/strong>\u4e16<\/strong>\u9593\u3002<\/strong>\u4e94<\/strong>\u860a<\/strong>\u6089\u5f9e\u751f\uff0c\u7121\u6cd5\u800c\u4e0d\u9020\u3002<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u5373\u4f7f\u79d1\u5b78\u5bb6\u907f\u514d<\/strong>\u8ac7\u8ad6<\/strong>\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\uff0c\u4ed6<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u7684\u5426\u5b9a\uff0c\u672c\u8eab\u5c31\u662f\u610f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u7684\u8868<\/strong>\u73fe\u3002<\/strong> <\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In a simplified language, the quantum system is described by a wave function developed from Schodinger\u2019s equation, which consists of infinite possibilities of different states and is constantly ongoing. According to the lecturer, wave function does not assign definite properties (position, momentum, etc) to physical entities. In fact, the real nature of the wavefunction is still unknown, all they know about is that the wave function square is a probability. So, it describes the probability of a superposition of multiple values of the entity. Superposition refers to the ability of a quantum system to exist in multiple states simultaneously until measured. This contrasts with classical physics, where an object can be in only one state at a time (e.g., a light switch is either on or off). Quantum superposition applied to macroscopic objects resulted in a paradox known as the \u201cSchrodinger’s cat\u201d. Schr\u00f6dinger’s cat is a thought experiment in quantum mechanics that illustrates the concept of superposition. In the experiment, a cat is placed in a sealed box with a radioactive atom, a device that can release poison, and a Geiger counter. If the atom decays, the Geiger counter triggers the release of poison, killing the cat. If the atom doesn’t decay, the cat lives. Until the box is opened and the cat is observed, it exists in a superposition of being both alive and dead. Most importantly, our observation or measurement collapses the wave function, reducing its infinite possibility into a single state. This conclusion is supported by the Double-Slit Experiment. In simple words, when observed, the light behaves like particles, but when it is not observed, it behaves like waves. So, whether the light is wave or particle depends on the observation. This is where consciousness get introduced to the system. Measurement is an act of consciousness, and that consciousness plays the role of bringing about wave function collapse. But of course, this is just one of the many interpretations of quantum mechanics and many scientists still don\u2019t accept the idea of consciousness as the cause of wave function collapse. But I am not interested in going into details about that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Up to now, the connection between quantum mechanics and Yogacara is quite obvious. Even though they don\u2019t overlap perfectly, the quantum system serves as a good metaphor to describe the Yogacara thinking. The eighth consciousness is just like the wave functions where infinite possibility is stored as a continuous stream of potentials in that energy field. Upon contact, where the sense organ, the sense object, and the consciousness meet simultaneously, the wave function collapses, and all the seeds from the eighth consciousness come to the six consciousness by association. More interestingly, the collapse of wave function is not irreversible, as long as we stop observing or measuring, it stops collapsing, which gives us the hint to liberation. In terms of cultivation, when dharmas arise in our mind, whether it is thought, feeling, emotions, etc.., if we do not pay extra attention to it, we won\u2019t charge it with momentum, and therefore it will just pass through without collapsing. However, if the mind moves toward it, from just observing, to grasping, with intention of wanting or avoiding, the karma is created and new seeds are being planted. Therefore, when we talk about liberation or enlightenment, it is not something far away or abstract from our experience, but rather, it is freedom of the mind at the very present moment. So far, from what I have learned, freedom means the space of the mind to observe without added understanding, especially attachment. What arises at the present moment of our mind is already karmic, liking or disliking included, the freedom lies in our responses toward the arisal. Instead of reacting in a habitual way of grasping and getting entangled, we can respond with loving kindness and equanimity. From my personal experience, the key toward equanimity is a deep relaxation of mind, body and heart. And a key element of relaxation lies in the non-judgmental mind and the confidence in our own Buddha nature. For my current experience, it is not about not having any personal opinion or preferences, but more about when I see myself being<\/p>\n\n\n\n

judgmental, not judging that judgmental self either, because it is usually the second layer of reaction that drags me down the road of affliction. In the end, the insight from Shurangama Sutra is still powerful. If our ignorance is an added understanding upon understanding, then all we need to do is not to add understanding on top of understanding, at all levels as we can. No matter how much affliction or confusion we have, we can always start with not adding further affliction and confusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5f9e<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b\u89d2\u5ea6\u4f86\u770b\uff0c\u91cf\u5b50\u529b\u5b78\u8207\u552f<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u5b78\u4e4b<\/strong>\u9593<\/strong>\u7684<\/strong>\u806f<\/strong>\u7e6b\u5c31<\/strong>\u8b8a<\/strong>\u5f97\u76f8\u7576\u6e05\u6670\u3002<\/strong>\u96d6<\/strong>\u7136\u5169\u8005\u4e0d\u80fd\u5b8c\u5168<\/strong>\u5c0d\u61c9<\/strong>\uff0c\u4f46\u6ce2\u51fd\u6578\u53ef\u4ee5<\/strong>\u985e<\/strong>\u6bd4<\/strong>\u70ba<\/strong>\u963f<\/strong>\u8cf4<\/strong>\u8036<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\uff0c\u5b83\u5b58<\/strong>\u5132<\/strong>\u8457\u7121\u91cf\u7684\u7a2e\u5b50\u8207\u53ef\u80fd\u6027\u3002\u4e00\u65e6\u611f\u5b98\u8207<\/strong>\u5c0d<\/strong>\u8c61\u548c<\/strong>\u8b58<\/strong>\u540c<\/strong>\u6642<\/strong>\u63a5\u89f8\uff0c\u6ce2\u51fd\u6578<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u574d<\/strong>\u7e2e<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\uff0c<\/strong>\u696d<\/strong>\u7a2e<\/strong>\u986f\u73fe\u3002<\/strong>\u66f4\u6709\u610f\u601d\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u53ea\u8981\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4e0d<\/strong>\u89c0<\/strong>\u5bdf\u3001\u4e0d\u5e72<\/strong>\u9810<\/strong>\uff0c<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u500b<\/strong>\u300c<\/strong>\u574d<\/strong>\u7e2e<\/strong>\u300d<\/strong>\u5c31\u4e0d\u6703<\/strong>\u767c<\/strong>\u751f\u3002\u5728\u4fee\u884c\u4e0a\uff0c<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u4ee3\u8868\u8457\uff1a\u7576\u5ff5<\/strong>\u982d<\/strong>\u751f\u8d77<\/strong>\u6642<\/strong>\uff0c\u53ea\u8981\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4e0d\u53bb<\/strong>\u57f7<\/strong>\u8457\u3001\u4e0d\u53bb<\/strong>\u8ce6<\/strong>\u4e88\u5b83\u80fd\u91cf\uff0c\u5b83\u5c31\u6703\u5982\u5e7b\u5316<\/strong>\u904e<\/strong>\uff1b\u4f46\u82e5\u6211<\/strong>\u5011<\/strong>\u4ecb\u5165\u3001\u8ffd\u9010\u3001\u6297\u62d2\uff0c\u5b83\u5c31\u6703\u5f62\u6210\u65b0\u7684<\/strong>\u696d<\/strong>\u529b\u3002\u89e3\u812b\uff0c\u5176<\/strong>\u5be6<\/strong>\u5c31\u662f<\/strong>\u9019<\/strong>\u4e00\u523b\u5fc3\u7684\u81ea\u7531\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n
