Good evening all Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Good and Wise Advisors, Sangha, Dharma Protectors, and Laity. Tonight is Aaron Friedman\u2019s turn to talk. That\u2019s Chin An as Dharma name, which means peace. May it prevail in the world, as it is needed more than ever. The title of my talk is \u201cIt is a long journey\u201d. I will start you with a question, \u201cWhat does it mean to be a young, Caucasian, American, male, volunteer in the 21st century?\u201d

My ten-year milestone at CTTB is August 24, 2025. Around just two weeks away. So for tonight\u2019s Dharma talk I wanted to give some basic advice based on my past time here at CTTB as well as a pitcher of that good Dharma Gatorade as it is around 100 degrees Fahrenheit today.

8\u670824\u865f\u5c31\u662f\u6211\u5728\u8056\u57ce\u5341\u9031\u5e74\u7684\u4e00\u500b\u91cc\u7a0b\u7891\u3002\u548c\u73fe\u5728\u5c31\u5269\u4e0b\u5169\u5468\u4e86\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\u4eca\u665a\u7684\u7d50\u6cd5\u7f18\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u7d50\u5408\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u8056\u57ce\u9019\u4e9b\u5e74\u7684\u7d93\u6b77\uff0c\u7d66\u5927\u5bb6\u4e00\u4e9b\u57fa\u672c\u7684\u5efa\u8b70\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u4e5f\u5949\u4e0a\u4e00\u58fa\u6e05\u6dbc\u7684\u300c\u4f5b\u6cd5\u4f73\u5f97\u6a02\u300d\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u4eca\u5929\u7684\u6c23\u6eab\u5927\u7d04\u6709\u83ef\u6c0f100\u5ea6\u3002\uff08\u8a3b\uff1a\u4f73\u5f97\u6a02\u70ba\u904b\u52d5\u98f2\u6599\u3002\uff09<\/strong>\u00a0

Yes I admit, it\u2019s ordinary advice. If you pay attention you might find something you did not know. But if you know a lot you might find many things I did not know. So feel free to share at any point during the speech as well as correct any mistakes I make. Here are some of the topics I would like to cover at CTTB. Relationships, fourfold assembly, culture, Dharma, precepts, and more. The theme is not to give up.\u00a0

\u6211\u627f\u8a8d\uff0c\u9019\u4e9b\u90fd\u662f\u5f88\u666e\u901a\u7684\u5efa\u8b70\u3002\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u7528\u5fc3\u807d\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ef\u80fd\u6703\u767c\u73fe\u4e00\u4e9b\u4f60\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u3002\u4f46\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u5df2\u7d93\u77e5\u9053\u5f88\u591a\uff0c\u4e5f\u8a31\u6703\u767c\u73fe\u5f88\u591a\u6211\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u7684\u5730\u65b9\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u5728\u6211\u8b1b\u8a71\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u8acb\u96a8\u6642\u5206\u4eab\u4f60\u7684\u60f3\u6cd5\uff0c\u4e5f\u6b61\u8fce\u6307\u6b63\u6211\u7684\u932f\u8aa4\u3002\u4ee5\u4e0b\u662f\u6211\u60f3\u8ac7\u5728\u8056\u57ce\u751f\u6d3b\u7684\u4e3b\u984c\uff1a\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u3001\u56db\u773e\u5f1f\u5b50\u3001\u6587\u5316\u3001\u4f5b\u6cd5\u3001\u6212\u5f8b\u7b49\u7b49\u3002\u4e3b\u984c\u5c31\u662f\u2014—\u4e0d\u8981\u653e\u68c4\u3002

Let me start by saying life can be filled with all kinds of relationships. At CTTB it is no different. You have long-term relationships as well as short-term relationships. You can also have good and bad relationships, right and wrong relationships, positive and negative relationships. It is important to be realistic about your relationships and to recognize you will encounter relationships that challenge you in ways and have to learn to adapt.

\u9996\u5148\u6211\u8981\u8aaa\uff0c\u4eba\u751f\u4e2d\u5145\u6eff\u4e86\u5404\u7a2e\u5404\u6a23\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u8056\u57ce\u4e5f\u4e00\u6a23\u3002\u9019\u88cf\u6709\u9577\u671f\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u77ed\u671f\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\uff1b\u6709\u597d\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u4e0d\u597d\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff1b\u6709\u6b63\u78ba\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u932f\u8aa4\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff1b\u6709\u7a4d\u6975\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u6d88\u6975\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\u3002\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u662f\uff0c\u5c0d\u9019\u4e9b\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u8981\u4fdd\u6301\u5be6\u5728\u7684\u614b\u5ea6\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u610f\u8b58\u5230\uff0c\u4f60\u6703\u9047\u5230\u5728\u5404\u65b9\u9762\u6311\u6230\u4f60\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u9019\u6642\u4f60\u8981\u5b78\u6703\u9069\u61c9\u8207\u8abf\u6574<\/strong>\u3002

Often this can be after the fact as we cannot always predict what is going to happen to us or what things are going to be like. You are living with or around many people and may be affected by them in surprising and unusual ways or ordinary and boring ways. It really depends on the person you have with you.

\u9019\u7a2e\u60c5\u6cc1\u5f80\u5f80\u662f\u5728\u4e8b\u5f8c\u624d\u6703\u660e\u767d\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u6211\u5011\u7121\u6cd5\u9810\u6e2c\u6703\u9047\u5230\u4ec0\u9ebc\u4e8b\uff0c\u4e5f\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u4e8b\u60c5\u5982\u4f55\u767c\u5c55\u3002\u7576\u4f60\u8207\u8a31\u591a\u4eba\u540c\u4f4f\u6216\u5728\u4ed6\u5011\u5468\u570d\u6642\uff0c\u5c31\u53ef\u80fd\u6703\u4ee5\u610f\u60f3\u4e0d\u5230\u3001\u4e0d\u5c0b\u5e38\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u88ab\u4ed6\u5011\u5f71\u97ff\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u53ef\u80fd\u5c31\u53ea\u662f\u4ee5\u5e73\u6de1\u7121\u5947\u7684\u65b9\u5f0f\u5f71\u97ff\u3002\u9019\u5176\u5be6\u53d6\u6c7a\u65bc\u4f60\u8eab\u908a\u7684\u9019\u500b\u4eba\u662f\u8ab0\u3002

You also have a long-term relationship with the group as well as smaller groups that you have to struggle with and succeed with. You may encounter personal difficulty or achievement and may even be critical or praising of how things go. But don\u2019t be taken for a loop, some behaviors that may affect you a little on the outside, over the long run, do add up, so it is important to ask for help and insulate yourself at CTTB with people you trust who are also wise. That starts and ends with Shr Fu. As he is clearly the highest source of wisdom and compassion in the community.

\u5728\u9019\u88cf\uff0c\u4f60\u6703\u548c\u5927\u5718\u9ad4\u5efa\u7acb\u9577\u671f\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u4e5f\u6703\u8207\u4e00\u4e9b\u8f03\u5c0f\u7684\u7fa4\u9ad4\u5efa\u7acb\u95dc\u4fc2\u3002\u5728\u9019\u4e9b\u95dc\u4fc2\u4e2d\uff0c\u4e5f\u6703\u7d93\u6b77\u4e9b\u78e8\u7df4\uff0c\u624d\u80fd\u7372\u5f97\u6210\u5c31\u3002\u5728\u9019\u88cf\uff0c\u4f60\u53ef\u80fd\u6703\u9047\u5230\u500b\u4eba\u7684\u6311\u6230\uff0c\u4e5f\u6703\u53d6\u5f97\u500b\u4eba\u7684\u6210\u5c31\uff0c\u6709\u6642\u4e5f\u514d\u4e0d\u4e86\uff0c\u53ef\u80fd\u5c0d\u5f85\u7a2e\u7a2e\u4e8b\u60c5\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6279\u8a55\u6216\u7a31\u8b9a\u7684\u770b\u6cd5\u3002\u4f46\u4e5f\u4e0d\u8981\u88ab\u4e8b\u60c5\u7e5e\u6688\u4e86\uff0c\u6709\u4e9b\u884c\u70ba\u96d6\u7136\u5728\u8868\u9762\u4e0a\u5c0d\u4f60\u7684\u5f71\u97ff\u4f3c\u4e4e\u5f88\u5c0f\uff0c\u4f46\u9577\u9060\u4f86\u770b\u537b\u6703\u7a4d\u7d2f\u8d77\u4f86\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u662f\u8981\u5b78\u6703\u5c0b\u6c42\u5e6b\u52a9\uff0c\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u8056\u57ce\u4e2d\u8207\u90a3\u4e9b\u503c\u5f97\u4fe1\u4efb\u3001\u548c\u6709\u667a\u6167\u7684\u4eba\u5efa\u7acb\u6e9d\u901a\u3002\u9019\u4e00\u5207\u7684\u958b\u59cb\u8207\u7d50\u675f\uff0c\u90fd\u5728\u65bc\u5e2b\u7236\u4e0a\u4eba\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u4ed6\u662f\u8056\u57ce\u4e2d\u667a\u6167\u8207\u6148\u60b2\u7684\u6700\u9ad8\u7684\u6e90\u6cc9\u3002

Short-term relationships are temporary but can be intense once and a while. Keeping it at a mellow pace and setting healthy boundaries are always a good idea. However, it can be tricky to know what a boundary is in another culture in certain circumstances. Overall, do not be afraid to monitor your relationships so you can improve them and learn from them.

\u77ed\u671f\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u96d6\u7136\u662f\u66ab\u6642\u7684\uff0c\u4f46\u6709\u6642\u4e5f\u53ef\u80fd\u6703\u975e\u5e38\u5f37\u70c8\u3002\u4fdd\u6301\u5e73\u548c\u7684\u7bc0\u594f\u3001\u8a2d\u5b9a\u5065\u5eb7\u7684\u754c\u9650\uff0c\u61c9\u8a72\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u660e\u667a\u7684\u505a\u6cd5\u3002\u4f46\u6709\u6642\uff0c\u5982\u4f55\u5728\u53e6\u4e00\u7a2e\u6587\u5316\u80cc\u666f\u4e2d\u5224\u65b7\u4ec0\u9ebc\u662f\u5408\u9069\u7684\u754c\u9650\uff0c\u4e26\u4e0d\u662f\u5f88\u5bb9\u6613\u3002\u7e3d\u7684\u4f86\u8aaa\uff0c\u4e0d\u8981\u5bb3\u6015\u53bb\u6aa2\u8996\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\uff0c\u9019\u6a23\u4f60\u624d\u80fd\u6539\u5584\u5b83\u5011\uff0c\u4e5f\u80fd\u5f9e\u4e2d\u5b78\u7fd2\u3002

What does that mean to keep up with your relationships? When you do house keeping you are cleaning up your house and preventing new stuff from arising. When you monitor you can imagine bad elements to relationships going down as well as good elements improving over time and working toward this. In other words, maintain your relationships like you would a clean environment.

\u300c\u7dad\u6301\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u300d\u662f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u610f\u601d\u5462\uff1f\u5c31\u50cf\u4f60\u6253\u6383\u623f\u5b50\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u4f60\u5728\u6e05\u7406\u5c4b\u5b50\u88cf\u7684\u96dc\u7269\u6642\uff0c\u6703
\u9632\u6b62\u589e\u6dfb\u65b0\u96dc\u7269\u3002\u7576\u4f60\u53bb\u89c0\u5bdf\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u6642\uff0c\u53ef\u4ee5\u60f3\u50cf\uff0c\u628a\u5f71\u97ff\u95dc\u4fc2\u4e0d\u597d\u7684\u56e0\u7d20\u6e1b\u5c11\uff0c\u597d\u7684\u56e0\u7d20\u6703\u96a8\u8457\u6642\u9593\u800c\u589e\u52a0\uff0c\u5c31\u671d\u8457\u9019\u500b\u65b9\u5411\u53bb\u52aa\u529b\u3002\u63db\u53e5\u8a71\u8aaa\uff0c\u5c31\u662f\u8981\u50cf\u7dad\u6301\u4e00\u500b\u4e7e\u6de8\u7684\u74b0\u5883\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u53bb\u7dad\u8b77\u4f60\u7684\u4eba\u969b\u95dc\u4fc2\u3002<\/strong>\u00a0

It is important to remember that this Way-place tries to be a very friendly Way-place for all, but not everyone who steps on the property is friendly. They can be mean. They can be nice. So just keep an eye out for yourself and ask elders and friends for help.

\u8981\u8a18\u4f4f\uff0c\u9019\u500b\u9053\u5834\u52aa\u529b\u70ba\u6240\u6709\u4eba\u71df\u9020\u4e00\u500b\u975e\u5e38\u53cb\u5584\u7684\u74b0\u5883\uff0c\u4f46\u4e26\u4e0d\u662f\u6bcf\u4e00\u4f4d\u8e0f\u9032\u9019\u88cf\u7684\u4eba\u90fd\u662f\u53cb\u5584\u7684\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u53ef\u80fd\u5f88\u523b\u8584\uff0c\u4e5f\u53ef\u80fd\u5f88\u548c\u5584\u3002\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u8981\u7559\u610f\u4fdd\u8b77\u81ea\u5df1\uff0c\u4e26\u5411\u9577\u8f29\u548c\u670b\u53cb\u5c0b\u6c42\u5e6b\u52a9\u3002

I never could have imagined in my wildest dreams encountering a master like Shr Fu, even after he had left the world, based on my childhood. We simply do not have men like that in the Western world. At least not that I know of. It\u2019s really inspiring to come and be a small part of Shr Fu\u2019s vision, as well as my own part to it, as I feel everyone contributes in some way, and participates in it too.

\u53ef\u4ee5\u8aaa\u6211\u9023\u505a\u5922\u4e5f\u60f3\u4e0d\u5230\uff0c\u80fd\u8a8d\u8b58\u50cf\u4e0a\u4eba\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u5e2b\u7236\uff0c\u5373\u4f7f\u4e0a\u4eba\u7684\u8272\u8eab\u5df2\u7d93\u96e2\u4e16\uff0c\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u76f8\u9047\u4ecd\u8d85\u4e4e\u6211\u7ae5\u5e74\u7684\u60f3\u50cf\u3002\u5728\u897f\u65b9\u4e16\u754c\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u6839\u672c\u5c31\u6c92\u6709\u50cf\u4e0a\u4eba\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u4eba\u7269\u5b58\u5728\u3002\u81f3\u5c11\u64da\u6211\u6240\u77e5\u662f\u6c92\u6709\u7684\u3002\u80fd\u5920\u4f86\u5230\u9019\u88cf\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u5e2b\u7236\u5927\u9858\u666f\u4e2d\u7684\u4e00\u5c0f\u90e8\u5206\uff0c\u662f\u975e\u5e38\u9f13\u821e\u4eba\u7684\u3002\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u6bcf\u500b\u4eba\u4e5f\u90fd\u4ee5\u67d0\u7a2e\u65b9\u5f0f\u5728\u5e2b\u7236\u7684\u9858\u666f\u4e2d\uff0c\u8ca2\u737b\u8457\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u529b\u91cf\u3002\u00a0

I believe and see him as a really good example of what a master is. I also admire his wisdom and face (prestige), and hope he comes back in a Western form because I am Western and also think that would be a great contrast. But who knows?

I just feel very taken care of and looked after by the master, and greatly trust in his instincts and compassion to make sure I do not get into too much trouble, be it with myself or others.

\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u6211\u5728\u8056\u57ce\uff0c\u662f\u5f97\u5230\u4e0a\u4eba\u7684\u95dc\u7167\u548c\u770b\u8b77\u7684\u3002\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u4fe1\u4efb\u4ed6\u7684\u76f4\u89ba\u548c\u6148\u60b2\uff0c\u76f8\u4fe1\u4ed6\u6703\u78ba\u4fdd\u6211\u4e0d\u6703\u9677\u5165\u592a\u591a\u9ebb\u7169\uff0c\u7121\u8ad6\u662f\u5c0d\u81ea\u5df1\u9084\u662f\u5c0d\u4ed6\u4eba\u3002

Encountering monks for the first time was very ordinary and extraordinary. I am very happy to see people who dedicated their lives toward doing good and Dharma, and really uphold that well. I figure in the long run there will be many monks at CTTB, so it is a blessing to see 15 or 20 regularly and be able to understand them, at my level, as a group. I also like seeing their individual differences as well as harmony and really like interacting with them. The monks are good examples.

\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u9047\u898b\u50e7\u4eba\uff0c\u611f\u89ba\u65e2\u5e73\u5e38\u53c8\u89ba\u5f97\u5f88\u4e0d\u51e1\u3002\u6211\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u770b\u5230\u6709\u4eba\u5c07\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4e00\u751f\u5949\u737b\u7d66\u884c\u5584\u548c\u4f5b\u6cd5\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u771f\u6b63\u5207\u8eab\u5be6\u8e10\u9019\u7a2e\u7cbe\u795e\u3002\u6211\u60f3\u5f9e\u9577\u9060\u4f86\u770b\uff0c \u842c\u4f5b\u8056\u57ce\u6703\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u50e7\u4eba\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u73fe\u5728\u6bcf\u65e5\u80fd\u5920\u898b\u5230\u5341\u4e94\u5230\u4e8c\u5341\u4f4d\u7537\u773e\u6cd5\u5e2b\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u80fd\u5728\u6211\u7684\u5c64\u9762\u4e0a\u7406\u89e3\u50e7\u5718\uff0c\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u798f\u6c23\u3002\u6211\u559c\u6b61\u770b\u5230\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5011\u5f7c\u6b64\u7684\u4e0d\u540c\u8207\u96c6\u9ad4\u7684\u548c\u8ae7\u5171\u8655\uff0c\u4e5f\u5f88\u559c\u6b61\u8207\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u4e92\u52d5\u3002\u7537\u773e\u6cd5\u5e2b
\u90fd\u662f\u5f88\u597d\u7684\u699c\u6a23\u3002<\/strong>

Encountering nuns at CTTB is really incredible! There are so many of them. How many are there? Who knows? Maybe 50 or more. And they all do a great job with the Dharma as well as with each other. In the long run out-back (CTTB\u2019s east campus), we are going to have many nuns, so it is a privilege being able to see them all at CTTB where they are now. They are very respectful. The nuns are good examples.

The laymen tend do to do a great job with limited man power. As a whole, I feel they are very hardworking. I reflect that I myself admire and look up to the lay people and really wonder how I got to be one, given how inspiring they can be. I have had my share of individual differences or difficulties with some but that is expected in any community.

The laywomen are a great group and I wish them the best! I never could have imagined anyone from my younger years growing up and going to CTTB and becoming a laywoman. Then again, I find it hard to believe that I was able to find a truly special community like CTTB in a jungle of Western American knowledge and insight that I grew up with.\u00a0

Asian culture is a very new experience. When Shr Fu first came to America, I was told there were more Americans than Asians. I bet it was pizza, burgers, and hot dogs every day! No just kidding, did you catch that exclamation mark. Where did all my stress go? It\u2019s truly a blessing to see Asian culture in such a close and welcoming environment, and continually learn and realize how little I know, as well as how much wonder there is to know in Dharma.

It feels really good to be an American in America practicing and focusing single-mindedly on the Buddhist way of life and spiritual goal of ending birth and death. We Americans have a long way to go in Dharma, but it is ever so important to be upbeat and optimistic about everything going on and keep a positive attitude. The USA landscape is wide open and we are really going to get to see everything happen in a wonderful way.

I truly believe there will be a day when all races and all types of people will follow the Buddhist fFaith and peace will prevail on earth. My own experience is with a substantial amount of predominantly Asian and American Buddhists, as well as smaller amounts of different cultures.\u00a0

Dharma has been very stimulating and intriguing to listen to and read over the years. As a friendly lecture participant I\u2019ve learned a lot from Shr Fu, not just in his Dharma, but the personality he has penetrated my limited comprehension. There are so many original ideas in Dharma and unusual perspectives and stories.\u00a0

\u00a0You have to be a really good story teller to keep up with everything going on in the world. I feel one day, Dharma Masters will even be able to speak like Shr Fu does in real life. But maybe that is just a dream, that is just a dream.

Precepts are one of the hardest parts. The five precepts are something you have a cultural background for, but you really have to remember not to do them. The lying goes into four types of false speech. Jeez man, take it easy. I mean precepts and good behavior are ultimately necessary.

Recently, I took the Bodhisattva precepts in 2024. And I am dearly struggling with them. I don\u2019t recite the precepts right. I forget the precepts. I don\u2019t get them. I break them unintentionally. But I still have faith. I still have hope. I still believe. And, most necessarily, I always repent. And some are very geared toward the old days, some are more timeless.

\u00a0Lastly, shame and remorse are a very important part of life. So is repentance. Although I struggle to repent verbally inside when I go to the Great Compassion Repentance ceremony, I still cherish the chance to be able to do so and am working on having an open heart with Guan Yin Bodhisattva.

Just kidding, you can repent to everybody in the Buddha hall and they will heal you. You just have to have faith and believe it! As for shame and remorse, it is a long journey getting in touch with shame and how I feel about it inside. It is dull and sweet, it is sharp and tangy, it is spicy and happy? Who knows?
