\u8001\u982d\u5b50\u8ddf\u6052\u5177\u6cd5\u5e2b\u8aaa\uff1a\u300c\u6211\u4e0d\u662f\u4f60\u7684\u6575\u4eba\uff0c\u6211\u662f\u4f60\u7684\u670b\u53cb\u3002\u300d\u9019\u8a71\u5c31\u50cf\u662f\u63d0\u9192\u6052\u5177\u6cd5\u5e2b\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5584\u77e5\u8b58\uff0c\u662f\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5584\u53cb\u3002<\/p>\n \u4e0b\u9762\u7684\u8a71\u4e0d\u662f\u6211\u76f4\u63a5\u5f9e\u4e0a\u4eba\u90a3\u88e1\u807d\u5230\u7684\uff0c\u90a3\u500b\u6052\u5177\u6cd5\u5e2b\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u8aaa\uff0c\u7576\u62dc\u5b8c\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4e0a\u4eba\u5c31\u8ddf\u4ed6\u5011\u8aaa\uff1a\u300c\u96d6\u7136\u4f60\u5011\u5728\u62dc\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4f60\u6c92\u6709\u975e\u5e38\u5713\u6eff\uff1b\u56e0\u70ba\u6700\u5f8c\u4f60\u767c\u813e\u6c23\u554a\u3001\u62dc\u5f97\u5f88\u5feb\u2026\u2026\u3002\u4f46\u662f\u56e0\u70ba\u4f60\u5011\u9019\u6a23\u5b50\u53d7\u82e6\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u9084\u662f\u5713\u6eff\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u4e09\u6b65\u4e00\u62dc\u3002\u9019\u4f4d\u8001\u982d\u5b50\u662f\u6587\u6b8a\u5e2b\u5229\u83e9\u85a9\uff0c\u4ed6\u73fe\u8eab\u4f86\u6559\u4f60\u7684\uff0c\u4ed6\u6700\u5f8c\u73fe\u8eab\u4f86\u6559\u4e86\u4f60\u4e00\u9ede\uff0c\u6240\u4ee5\u9019\u500b\u50cf\u662f\u611f\u61c9\u4e00\u6a23\u3002\u300d\u6052\u5177\u6cd5\u5e2b\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u8aaa\uff1a\u300c\u800c\u9019\u5169\u689d\u72d7\u5462\uff0c\u662f\u6587\u6b8a\u5e2b\u5229\u83e9\u85a9\u7684\u5169\u96bb\u7345\u5b50\u3002\u300d\u963f\u5f4c\u9640\u4f5b\uff01<\/p>\n Bhikshu Heng Shun on April 25, 2012 at Buddha Hall of CTTB<\/span><\/p>\n I was just thinking how fortunate we are to have the Venerable Master as our teacher. In Buddhism we call a good teacher a \u5584\u77e5\u8b58 (Shanzhishi). Actually the Chinese is a translation of the Sanskrit word,\u00a0 \u201cKalyanamitra\u201d, which literally means \u201cgood friend\u201d. In the last chapter of the Avatamsaka Sutra we have the spiritual pilgrimage of the youth Sudhana (literally \u201cGood Wealth\u201d) who visits 55 Kalyanamitras. Each teacher represents a successive level of enlightenment on the Bodhisattva path. The Venerable Ananda once asked the Buddha, \u201cWorld Honored One, I think 50 percent of practicing the path to enlightenment is having good friends.\u201d The Buddha told the Venerable Ananda,\u00a0 \u201cYou are wrong Ananda. Having good friends is 100% of the path to enlightenment.\u201d So in spiritual cultivation it\u2019s absolutely necessary to have good friends i.e. good teachers. When Sudhana first started his pilgrimage to visit all these teachers on the Bodhisattva path, Manjushri Bodhisattva said to him, \u201cIf you wish to seek for all-wisdom (to become a Buddha), you absolutely must seek for a true good teacher, a Kalyanamitra. You must seek for a good teacher without becoming weary or lax. You must try to find a good teacher without ever becoming satiated. You must always comply with the teachings of the good teacher.\u00a0 And you must never find fault with the skill-in-means of the good teacher.\u201d So the search for Kalyanamitras was the catalyst for Good Wealth\u2019s quest for Enlightenment.<\/p>\n We are very fortunate that Venerable Master, being the good teacher, the Kalyanamitra, had set up these opportunities for us to cultivate, like the Repentance Before the Ten Thousand Buddhas. Some people say that maybe some Americans don\u2019t really like to practice these types of Dharmas or perhaps that are not appropriate for people in modernAmerica.\u00a0 However, the Venerable Master, being the enlightened good teacher is someone who knows what\u2019s appropriate for a specific place and time in a particular culture. I\u2019m sure that, as time goes by, these practices that the Venerable Master has established will become widely accepted in our American culture. The true Kalyanamitra has a special kind of wisdom to know what\u2019s appropriate and long lasting in terms of the Buddhist teachings inAmerica. We are very fortunate to be able to practice these things at a time when very few people in the world actually have these opportunities.<\/p>\n Now, I\u2019m going to tell one of my favorite stories.\u00a0 It is a story about repentance and reform.\u00a0 I\u2019ve read I\u2019ve told this story many times to the students in theBoysSchoolover the years. Just like the Master\u2019s lectures that we listen to every evening. Although we may have heard them several times already, we do not grow weary of hearing the Buddha-Dharma. That\u2019s the proper attitude.<\/p>\n During this time, when it was getting unbearably difficult for Heng Ju, he still stuck with the practice and kept bowing. However, Heng Ju would often get mad at Heng You. It took them about ten to eleven months to finish the pilgrimage fromSan FranciscotoSeattle. So at the very end of Heng Ju\u2019s bowing pilgrimage, just a few days before they actually finished, they reached this place outside ofSeattle. Some people following the pilgrimage in the local newspapers and television had invited Heng Ju and Heng You to their general store, which sold all kinds of different products in addition to having a gas station.<\/p>\n A footnote to this story is that, because of the experience that Heng Ju and Heng You had with not having a proper shelter to stay in at night (particularly when there was bad weather), when Dharma Master Heng Shr and Marty did their bowing pilgrimage they decided to bring a station wagon that they could stay in at night. That made a great difference for them. However, getting back to the story. Heng Ju is bowing and he goes up to this general store. He sees all these people milling around wanting to see him. They had heard about his pilgrimage from the local newspaper and TV. There were probably 50 or more people waiting to see him. Then Heng Ju noticed a short old man with a white beard and glasses.\u00a0 He acted like he knew everybody, and he was driving a pick-up truck with a makeshift trailer, a home-made trailer, on the back. He had two dogs, and as far as Heng Ju could tell, it looked like he was trying to give away these two dogs. So all of a sudden, this short old man (Heng Ju is pretty tall, about 6-foot-2) comes right up to Heng Ju. Remember, this was 1974, and Heng Ju was wearing Buddhist monastic robes. Heng You had bowed a little ahead of him and didn\u2019t stop at the store. There was not a lot of Buddhist monks inAmericaat that time in 1974. Even though that was the case, this man comes right up to Heng Ju and says, \u201cDo you call yourself a Buddhist?\u201d Heng Ju noticed that this man was totally calm and relaxed. He wasn\u2019t trying to challenge him. He just looks up at Heng Ju and says, \u201cDo you call yourself a Buddhist?\u201d<\/p>\n Heng Ju was surprised at this. He replied, \u201cWhy, yes.\u201d\u00a0 And the short little man then said, \u201cDo you want to know what the Buddha taught in plain English?\u201d Now Heng Ju was even more taken aback. He thought to himself, \u201cWow! Where is this guy coming from? How should I answer this? If I say no, that would be rude. If I say yes, it\u2019s like I don\u2019t know and that would be embarrassing.\u201d<\/em> So he was caught in a dilemma. Finally, Heng Ju said, \u201cWhat did the Buddha teach?\u201d\u00a0 And the man told him, \u201cThe Buddha taught compassion. The Buddha said we should stop knocking each other around, but most people don\u2019t\u2019 buy it.\u201d<\/p>\n So then Heng Ju got defensive, and said, \u201cBuy what?\u201d\u00a0 The old man responded, \u201cWhat the Buddha taught,\u201d he kind of laughed, \u201cI don\u2019t think you are a complete convert to Buddhism.\u201d<\/p>\n Heng Ju was now getting very nervous and said, \u201cI didn\u2019t say I was perfect.\u201d The little man paused and moved closer, then looked right into Heng Ju\u2019s eyes.Heng Ju\u2019s mind started flashing all the memories of how he would get angry with Heng You.\u00a0 These events just started going through his mind as this man looked at him. The old man then said, \u201cThe Buddha taught compassion. Be more compassionate.\u201d\u00a0 Then he took off his glasses, and I could just imagine how the little man is probably as short as me and Heng Ju is almost a foot taller than him. So he takes off his glasses, puts his face about one foot away from Heng Ju\u2019s, and he says, \u201cI\u2019m not your enemy. I\u2019m your friend. How many people do you know who would talk to you like this?\u201d<\/p>\n Although I didn\u2019t hear the Venerable Master say this, Heng Ju told me much later that the Venerable Master told him that the old man was actually a manifestation of Manjushri Bodhisattva.\u00a0 Although he didn\u2019t do as well as he wanted during the bowing pilgrimage, yet he was still able to stick with it and complete it, despite the many difficulties and hardships. So in response to his bowing, Manjushri Bodhisattva appeared to him and taught him an extremely important lesson about the Buddha\u2019s teachings on compassion. So this story is about the first Three Steps, One Bow pilgrimage by Heng Ju and Heng You. Many people don\u2019t realize how difficult this bowing pilgrimage fromSan FranciscotoSeattlewas for Heng Ju and Heng You. They just had a tent to sleep in at night. When there was bad weather is was very hard to get a good night\u2019s rest. Near the latter part of the bowing pilgrimage, when the weather was bad, it was so hard to bear that they often ended up sleeping in people\u2019s houses at night.<\/p>\n![\"\"](\"http:\/\/www.cttbchinese.org\/fayubinfen\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/05\/510-1.jpg\" "\\"510-1\\"")
Now remember that during this entire encounter there are all these people watching in what must have been sort of stunned silence. Heng Ju was at the very end of his long, arduous pilgrimage and all of sudden he meets this rather extraordinary old man. Heng Ju thought, \u201cWow! This person can see right through me.\u201d <\/em>Finally Heng Ju, who was left speechless, just started to bow again. As all the people watched, he bowed away from the general store. When he caught up with Heng You, he told him what had just happened. He felt very ashamed that he had gotten angry with Heng You. This unusual old man who told Heng Ju \u201cI\u2019m your friend\u201d reminds us of the good friend, the Kalyanamitra. The attitude of repentance that Heng Ju had at that time, is the same attitude that we should have as we do the Repentance Before the Ten Thousand Buddhas.\u00a0\u00a0 Heng Ju felt very repentant and ashamed of his behavior towards Heng You. He was very sorry that this had occurred.<\/p>\n
