Dear honorable elders, students, and members of the public,<\/p>\n
Thank you for inviting me here this morning to speak on Honoring Elders Day.\u00a0 Why does it take The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas to remind me and other people from outside this community to take time out of our regular routine to acknowledge and appreciate the wisdom, the sacrifices, and the gifts that our elders provide us?\u00a0 It isn\u2019t so much that we don\u2019t appreciate our elders in our thoughts as we are reminded of them from time to time. We do. It\u2019s just that we Americans don\u2019t SET ASIDE time, deliberately, to do this. I am afraid to admit that I don\u2019t believe that our culture actually values old age as much as it values youth.\u00a0 My mother used to say, before she got Alzheimers disease, that once she reached middle age, she felt invisible. That made me sad because I knew how smart and wise she was, a professor of psychology at a university who always had strong ideas about things.<\/p>\n
Since I have come to know The City of Ten Thousand Buddhas, in the small way that I have in the 20 years that I\u2019ve lived in Ukiah, I have come to see that this bias toward youth is cultural—that it isn\u2019t natural<\/em> that Americans see right past senior citizens, as if they don\u2019t have anything to offer, as if they are transparent, like my mother observed. Other cultures, such as the Chinese culture, are different that way. In Chinese culture, people are deferential to their elders! And, moreover, here we have a special day set aside to remind us of the beauty and the gift that our elders offer us, if we just stop to look.<\/p>\nAlthough I am disappointed that our American culture tends to devalue old age, I am happy about one facet ofAmerica. And that is thatAmericais a “melting pot”. This country has always welcomed people from many different cultures. As a result, I am able to learn and benefit from the wisdom offered by their customs and observances, in this case to be present with you here today to take time to honor our elders.<\/p>\n

\u6bcf\u6b21\u4f86\u5230\u842c\u4f5b\u8056\u57ce\uff0c\u6211\u90fd\u611f\u5230\u5099\u53d7\u6b61\u8fce\u3002\u4eca\u5929\u6211\u5011\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u6176\u795d\u201d\u656c\u8001\u7bc0\u201d. \u7576\u6211\u5f97\u77e5\u6bcf\u4e00\u4f4d\u4f4f\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u7684\u9577\u8005\u90fd\u61c9\u9080\u4f86\u53c3\u52a0\u9019\u5f9e1992\u5e74\u958b\u59cb\u6176\u795d\u7684\u656c\u8001\u7bc0\uff0c\u6211\u5fc3\u88e1\u89ba\u5f97\u5f88\u6eab\u99a8\u3002\u6211\u5011\u5f88\u9ad8\u8208\u770b\u5230\uff0c\u80b2\u826f\u5c0f\u5b78\u548c\u57f9\u5fb7\u4e2d\u5b78\u7684\u5b78\u751f\uff0c\u70ba\u6240\u6709\u4f86\u8cd3\u8868\u6f14\u97f3\u6a02\u821e\u8e48\u7b49\u7bc0\u76ee\uff0c\u9084\u8d08\u9001\u8001\u4eba\u5bb6\u624b\u5de5\u88fd\u4f5c\u7684\u53ef\u611b\u79ae\u7269\u3002\u6211\u4e5f\u8981\u7279\u5225\u611f\u8b1d\u5b78\u6821\u8001\u5e2b\u7684\u8f9b\u52de\uff0c\u6210\u5c31\u9019\u500b\u7279\u6b8a\u7684\u7bc0\u65e5\uff0c\u4e5f\u6210\u70ba\u5927\u5bb6\u5b78\u7fd2\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u3002\u9084\u8981\u611f\u8b1d\u5eda\u623f\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u4eba\u54e1\uff0c\u6e96\u5099\u4e86\u9019\u9ebc\u5065\u5eb7\u53c8\u7f8e\u5473\u7684\u7d20\u83dc\u3002\u8b1d\u8b1d\u60a8\u5011!<\/p>\n
\u656c\u8001\u662f\u6211\u5011\u6bcf\u5929\u90fd\u8a72\u505a\u7684\u4e8b\uff0c\u4eca\u5e74\u7684\u6176\u795d\u6d3b\u52d5\u7d66\u6211\u5011\u6a5f\u6703\u80fd\u5920\u767c\u9858\u4e00\u6574\u5e74\u90fd\u4f86\u656c\u8001\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u4e0d\u53ea\u656c\u8001\uff0c\u9084\u8981\u7167\u9867\u8001\u4eba\u5bb6\u3002\u6211\u7684\u516c\u516c\u6d3b\u5230100\u6b72\uff0c\u5728\u4eca\u5e74\u4e00\u6708\u904e\u4e16\u3002\u7167\u9867\u6211\u516c\u516c\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u5011\u5168\u5bb6\u90fd\u5b78\u5230\u5f88\u591a\u3002\u6211\u5011\u4e5f\u7e7c\u7e8c\u7167\u9867\u621190\u6b72\u7684\u8001\u6bcd\u89aa\uff0c\u5979\u73fe\u5728\u5e74\u8001\u9ad4\u8870\u3002\u6211\u6bcd\u89aa\u8ddf\u6211\u516c\u516c\u751f\u524d\u4e00\u6a23\uff0c\u90fd\u4e0d\u9858\u96e2\u5bb6\u53e6\u4f4f\uff0c\u6211\u516c\u516c\u662f\u5728\u5bb6\u88e1\u58fd\u7d42\u6b63\u5be2\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u4e5f\u5e0c\u671b\u540c\u6a23\u7167\u9867\u6bcd\u89aa\u9824\u990a\u5929\u5e74\u3002<\/p>\n
\u6211\u554f\u904e\u6211\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u662f\u5426\u505a\u4e86\u7b46\u8a18\uff0c\u8981\u5982\u4f55\u7167\u9867\u8001\u4eba\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5b69\u5b50\u7684\u7238\u548c\u6211\u4e5f\u90fd\u5782\u5782\u8001\u77e3\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u90fd\u8aaa\u662f\u7684\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u505a\u4e86\u7b46\u8a18\uff0c\u800c\u4e14\u5f9e\u7167\u9867\u7956\u7236\u548c\u5916\u5a46\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u4e2d\uff0c\u5b78\u5230\u5f88\u591a\u3002\u6211\u7684\u5b6b\u5b50\u8f29\u4e5f\u662f\u5982\u6b64\u3002\u6211\u5011\u7684\u9577\u8f29\u990a\u80b2\u6211\u5011\uff0c\u4e26\u5c07\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u667a\u6167\u8ddf\u6211\u5011\u5206\u4eab\uff0c\u4eca\u5929\u6b63\u662f\u70ba\u4ed6\u5011\u6176\u795d\u7684\u7279\u5225\u7bc0\u65e5\uff0c\u8b1d\u8b1d\u5927\u5bb6!<\/p>\n
I feel so very welcomed whenever I come to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas. Today we all join together to celebrate Honoring Elders Day. It is heartwarming to me to know that all elders within the community are invited to this holiday first established in 1992. We all take delight in the presentations by students from the Instilling Goodness Elementary andDevelopingVirtueSecondary Schoolsas they perform dances and music for their guests along with lovely handmade gifts to the elders. I extend a special thank you to their teachers who work hard to make this occasion very special and a learning experience for all.\u00a0 To the Dining Hall kitchen staff who prepare all the healthy and tasty vegetarian dishes, thank you.<\/p>\n
Honoring our Elders is something we should do every day. This yearly celebration gives us the opportunity to faithfully pledge this commitment year-round, not only honoring but also caring of our elderly population.\u00a0 My family was enriched by the experience of caring for my father-in-law as he became very frail and until he passed at 100 years old last January. We continue to provide care for my 90 year old mother who has been slowly declining with age. Neither one wanted to be placed outside their home, if at all possible. We were able to grant this to my father-in-law and it is our desire to do so for my mother.<\/p>\n
I asked my children if they were taking notes on how to care for elders since their father and I are entering our twilight years. They have responded yes and agreed they have learned much from this special experience of providing care for their grandparents. My grandchildren have too.<\/p>\n
Our elders raise us, educate us, and share their wisdom with us. Today is their special day. Thank you.<\/p>\n
