\u4f86\u5230\u8056\u57ce\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u5169\u4f4d\u8a08\u756b\u8ca0\u8cac\u4eba\u544a\u8a34\u4ed6\u5011\u4e0d\u80fd\u5920\u5e36\u624b\u6a5f\u4f86\uff0c\u8981\u5c0a\u91cd\u9053\u5834\u548c\u73cd\u60dc\u9019\u6b21\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u3002\u5728\u9019\u9031\u5feb\u7d50\u675f\u6642\uff0c\u5f88\u591a\u4eba\u8f2a\u6d41\uff08\u4e00\u6b21\u5169\u500b\u4eba\uff09\u767c\u9858\u7981\u8a9e\u4e00\u5169\u5929\u3002\u7981\u8a9e\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u5f9e\u904e\u53bb\u66fe\u670d\u52d9\u904e\u8056\u57ce\u7684\u5b78\u59d0\u5b78\u9577\u5011\u5b78\u4f86\u7684\u3002<\/p>\n

\u9031\u672b\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u554f\u5b78\u751f\u4ed6\u5011\u6700\u96e3\u5fd8\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u70ba\u4f55\uff1f\u5176\u4e2d\u4e00\u4f4d\u8aaa\uff1a\uff62\u6709\u4e00\u4f4d\u5973\u6cd5\u5e2b\u6559\u6211\u600e\u9ebc\u7528\u8d77\u8ca8\u6a5f\uff01\uff63\u9019\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u4e5f\u5f9e\u665a\u9593\u7684\u4e0a\u8ab2\u4e2d\u5b78\u5230\u751a\u9ebc\u662f\u5b5d\u9806\uff0c\u4e26\u8aaa\u4ee5\u5f8c\u7236\u6bcd\u82e5\u5230\u5b78\u6821\u770b\u4ed6\u6642\uff0c\u4ed6\u6703\u5c0d\u4ed6\u5011\u884c\u79ae\u3002<\/p>\n

\u5176\u4e2d\u6709\u4e00\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u505a\u4e86\u4e00\u4ef6\u4ee4\u6211\u5403\u9a5a\u7684\u4e8b\uff1a\u7576\u9824\u6cd5\u5e2b\u7d66\u4ed6\u4e00\u90e8\u842c\u4f5b\u5bf6\u61fa\u6642\uff0c\u5b78\u751f\u5c0d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u9802\u79ae\u3002\u6211\u597d\u5947\u5730\u554f\u4ed6\u662f\u5f9e\u54ea\u88e1\u5b78\u7684\u3002\u4ed6\u8aaa\u5728Eckerd\u6642\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u4e0a\u4e86\u4e09\u500b\u79ae\u62dc\u7684\u5bc6\u96c6\u8ab2\u7a0b\uff0c\u800c\u4ed6\u62ff\u7684\u8ab2\u5c31\u662f\u4f5b\u5b78\u8ab2\u3002\u4e09\u500b\u79ae\u62dc\u7684\u8ab2\u63a5\u8fd1\u5c3e\u8072\u6642\uff0c\u6559\u6388\u5c0d\u73ed\u4e0a\u8aaa\uff1a\u300c\u73fe\u5728\u6211\u8981\u505a\u7684\u9019\u4ef6\u4e8b\u662f\u5f9e\u4f86\u6c92\u6709\u4eba\u6703\u5c0d\u4f60\u505a\u904e\u7684\u3002\u300d\u8aaa\u5b8c\uff0c\u6559\u6388\u7acb\u5373\u5411\u6240\u6709\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u78d5\u982d\u884c\u5927\u79ae\u3002\u9019\u500b\u8209\u52d5\u8b93\u9019\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u5370\u8c61\u6df1\u523b\u3002\u4ed6\u8aaa\u9019\u662f\u552f\u4e00\u4ed6\u77e5\u9053\u53ef\u4ee5\u5c0d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5011\u8868\u9054\u611f\u8b1d\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u3002\u7136\u800c\uff0c\u5c0dJames\uff08\u53e6\u4e00\u4f4d\u6d3b\u52d5\u63a5\u5f85\u4eba\uff09\u548c\u6211\uff0c\u4ed6\u53ef\u4ee5\u7528\u8a00\u8a9e\u8868\u9054\u4ed6\u7684\u611f\u6fc0\u3002<\/p>\n

A Report on Eckerd College\u2019s Service Trip<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n

On a cold Sunday evening, March 18, Brooks, Don and I drove to the local Greyhound Station to pick up 12 EckerdCollege\u00a0students from St. Petersburg, Florida. \u00a0They had just traveled 19 hours to get to CTTB. \u00a0When we arrived, they were shivering in the cold while waiting for us.. \u00a0The week before, during the Guan Yin Session, it had rained almost every day in Ukiah.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

Why would a group of 18 years old to 22 years old come to a Buddhist monastery on their spring break when they can go and party in Cancun or somewhere else? \u00a0Eckerd College is a private school that has roughly 1800 students and was \u00a0listed as the top 40 colleges that change lives in 2006 by Loren Pope. \u00a0The college provides 20 service trips all over the world i.e. Iceland, Mexico,\u00a0Australia \u00a0and the U.S. doing jobs such as building houses, serving meals to the homeless\u00a0etc…The trips are coordinated by students and faculty. In this case, the coordinators were here two years ago and had such a profound experience at \u00a0CTTB that they decided to arrange another service trip back to the monastery. \u00a0Students who wish to do a service trip apply to their top 5 service destinations. This year the Eckerd coordinators in charge of the CTTB service trip selected the students from different grade levels. \u00a0This time, the majority was Freshman. \u00a0The reason is to give the lower class an opportunity to coordinate the next trip when the upperclassmen graduate from college.<\/p>\n

The goal for coming is to serve the CTTB community. \u00a0The original intent and request was to work on the organic farm which they have done twice before. \u00a0In 2008, it was the Eckerd college students who helped build the green house and worked with Mr. Fan. \u00a0In 2010, they also worked on the farm with R2. \u00a0However, due to the unusual weather, it rained almost every day so the students had to work on the loading dock:. \u00a0The men moved heavy boxes of sutra texts and Venerable Master\u2019s Dharma talks from Building 1 2 3 to the book warehouse. \u00a0The women worked on organizing the warehouse to create more spaces for the books. \u00a0In addition, the women were lucky enough to work on the farm behind the nuns\u2019 quarters when the clouds cleared. \u00a0On one of those days, Heng Yin Shr brought a group of 4th to 6th graders to work with the girls.<\/p>\n

\"\"\u00a0\u00a0\"\"<\/p>\n

The Eckerd students also participated in the schedule of CTTB: \u00a0waking up at 3:30a.m. and ending the day at 9:00p.m. \u00a0They attended all the ceremonies, meditation, work, and evening lectures with the monks, nuns and Doug Powers. \u00a0By attending all the ceremonies, they learned to appreciate monastic life the immersion of a Buddhist culture. \u00a0One of the students commented that she love to see all the monks and nuns. \u00a0Many said that they came to a Buddhist monastery to push them out of their comfort zone and to immerse in another faith others than the one they know.<\/p>\n

Before they came, the two coordinators told them not to bring their cell phones or be plugged in and to always be respectful and take the experiences as they are. \u00a0Toward the end of the week, many of them took turns (two at a time) doing the vow of silence for a day or two. \u00a0They learned to do this by following the examples of the students who came to CTTB before. \u00a0At the end of the week, we asked the students what was their most memorable experience, one of them said, \u201cA nun taught me how to use a fork lift. This same student learned about filial piety in the evening class and said that when his parents visit him later in school, he will bow to them.<\/p>\n

One of them did something that surprised me. \u00a0He bowed to Dharma Master Yi when she gave him a copy of the Ten Thousand Buddhas Repentance. \u00a0I asked him where did he learn to do that and he said that in Eckerd, they have 3 weeks of intensive classes and the class he took was Buddhism. \u00a0At the end of the 3 weeks class, the professor said that no one will ever do this to you and after saying that, \u00a0the professor bowed down to all of his students. \u00a0This made such an impression on this student that he said, this was the only way that he knew how to express his gratitude to the nun whereas for James (the other coordinator) and I, he could thank us with words.<\/p>\n

At the end of week, when we were debriefing, the students told James and I that they know there were a lot of people involved in making their stay a successful. They would like to thank each and everyone for their support. They thanked Dharma Master Ran for preparing a special dinner for them on Saturday evening which was the best food they have ever had. \u00a0They stuffed themselves so much that they weren\u2019t hungry the next morning.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
