I\u2019m currently a Chinese teacher at the Boys\u2019 School. This is my third time tying dharma affinities with all of you at the Buddha Hall. The last time was in February this year. Although half a year is not very long, a lot has happened since then. Today I will take this opportunity to share with you some of my teaching experiences and insights during this period. If there is time left, I would like to talk a little bit about my summer experience. If I say anything wrong or improper, please feel free to correct me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u9019\u534a\u5e74\uff0c\u5728\u6211\u7684\u6559\u5b78\u4e2d\u767c\u751f\u4e86\u7684\u4e00\u4e9b\u6709\u610f\u601d\u7684\u4e8b\uff0c\u9019\u4e9b\u4e8b\u5f88\u96e3\u8207\u4ed6\u4eba\u5206\u4eab\uff0c\u4f46\u4eca\u5929\u5728\u5927\u6bbf\u88e1\u8aaa\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u85c9\u6b64\u5411\u4f5b\u83e9\u85a9\u3001\u5411\u4e0a\u4eba\u5c0d\u6211\u4eba\u751f\u7684\u6307\u5f15\u8868\u9054\u6df1\u6df1\u7684\u611f\u6069<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u53bb\u5e74\u9664\u4e86\u5c0f\u5b78\u4e94\u516d\u5e74\u7d1a\u548c\u521d\u4e2d\u5916\uff0c\u6211\u9084\u5e36\u9ad8\u4e2d\u7684AP\u4e2d\u6587\u73ed\uff0c\u73ed\u4e0a\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u5927\u591a\u4f86\u81ea\u53f0\u7063\u548c\u4e2d\u570b\uff0c\u4e2d\u6587\u57fa\u790e\u826f\u597d\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u6211\u5011\u5148\u7528\u5169\u500b\u6708\u6642\u9593\u5b78\u7fd2\u6771\u6f22\u8a31\u614e\u7684\u300a\u8aaa\u6587\u89e3\u5b57\u300b\u4e2d\u7684540\u90e8\u9996\uff1b\u723e\u5f8c\u5b78\u4e86\u4e09\u7687\u4e94\u5e1d\u5230\u6771\u6649\u9019\u4e00\u6bb5\u53e4\u4ee3\u6b77\u53f2\u3002\u5728\u4e0a\u534a\u5b78\u5e74\u548c\u4e0b\u534a\u5b78\u5e74\u4ea4\u66ff\u4e4b\u671f\uff0c\u5247\u8207\u5b69\u5b50\u5011\u7df4\u7fd2\u6717\u8aa6\u4ed6\u5011\u6240\u9078\u64c7\u7684\u53e4\u8a69\u8a5e\uff0c\u5e6b\u52a9\u4ed6\u5011\u6e96\u5099\u6821\u5167\u7684\u8a69\u8a5e\u6bd4\u8cfd\uff0c\u5728\u6e96\u5099\u548c\u6bd4\u8cfd\u4e4b\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u548c\u5b69\u5b50\u5011\u90fd\u6536\u7a6b\u4e86\u7121\u9650\u7684\u559c\u6085\u548c\u5c0d\u8a69\u8a5e\u7684\u71b1\u611b\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u90fd\u7d50\u675f\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u624d\u958b\u59cb\u6559\u6388AP\u4e2d\u6587\u7684\u5167\u5bb9\u548c\u8003\u8a66\u6280\u5de7\uff0c\u70ba\u4e94\u6708\u521d\u7684AP\u7d71\u8003\u4f5c\u6e96\u5099\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In the past few months, some interesting things have happened in my teaching. It is difficult to share them with others, but I will tell them in the Buddha Hall today to express my deep gratitude to the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, and VM for their guidance.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Last year, in addition to elementary school and junior high, I also taught AP Chinese in high school. Most of the students in my class were from Taiwan and China and had a good foundation in Chinese.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We first spent two months studying the 540 radicals in &#8220;Shuowen Jiezi&#8221; written by Xu Shen of the Eastern Han Dynasty around 100 CE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Later, we learned about the ancient history from the Three Sovereigns and the Five Emperors to the Eastern Jin Dynasty, which is the history before 470 CE.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Between the fall and spring semesters, we practiced reciting ancient poems chosen by the students, helping them prepare for the school poetry competition. During the preparation and competition, the children and I gained a lot of joy and love for poetry.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">After all of this was over, I started teaching AP Chinese content and exam techniques for the AP exam in early May.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>AP\u4e2d\u6587\u4e2d\u6709\u5f88\u5927\u4e00\u90e8\u5206\u6d89\u53ca\u4e2d\u570b\u50b3\u7d71\u6587\u5316\uff0c\u6bd4\u5982\u4e2d\u570b\u7684\u50b3\u7d71\u5efa\u7bc9\u548c\u50b3\u7d71\u990a\u751f\u7406\u5ff5\uff0c\u90a3\u9019\u5c31\u4e00\u5b9a\u6703\u8b1b\u5230\u5bfa\u9662\u5efa\u7bc9\u53ca\u4e2d\u570b\u529f\u592b\uff0c\u56e0\u6b64\u9019\u5169\u8005\u7684\u4ea4\u96c6\u5c31\u5728\u843d\u5728\u5c11\u6797\u5bfa\u9019\u500b\u4e3b\u984c\u4e0a\u3002\u6211\u5e0c\u671b\u5e36\u7d66\u5b69\u5b50\u5011\u4e00\u4e9b\u73fe\u5be6\u7684\u5167\u5bb9\uff0c\u4e0d\u5e0c\u671b\u4ed6\u5011\u8a8d\u70ba\u50b3\u7d71\u5927\u90fd\u662f\u7528\u4e0d\u4e0a\u7684\u8001\u53e4\u8463\uff0c\u65bc\u662f\u5728\u8a73\u7d30\u8b1b\u5b8c\u4e2d\u570b\u5bfa\u9662\u5efa\u7bc9\u4f48\u5c40\uff0c\u4ecb\u7d39\u4e86\u5c11\u6797\u5bfa\u548c\u5c11\u6797\u529f\u592b\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u53c8\u4ecb\u7d39\u4e86\u4e00\u4f4d\u5f9e\u5c0f\u5b78\u7fd2\u5c11\u6797\u529f\u592b\uff0c\u4e26\u5728\u5fb7\u570b\u5efa\u7acb\u7684\u6b50\u6d32\u5c11\u6797\u5bfa\u7684\u51fa\u5bb6\u4eba\u91cb\u6046\u7fa9\u7d66\u5b78\u751f\u5011\u3002\u9019\u4f4d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u5e74\u9f61\u5927\u6982\u56db\u5341\u4f86\u6b72\uff08\u4e0d\u78ba\u5b9a\uff09\uff0c\u4e9e\u6d32\u4eba\uff0c\u51fa\u751f\u6210\u9577\u65bc\u5fb7\u570b\uff0c\u8aaa\u5fb7\u6587\u548c\u82f1\u6587\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A large part of AP Chinese involves traditional Chinese culture, such as traditional Chinese architecture and healthcare, so a notable thing we discussed was temple architecture and Chinese Kung Fu, which intersected at the Shaolin Temple. I hoped to bring some realistic content to the children, since I didn\u2019t want them to think that these traditions are old and antiquated. Therefore, after explaining the architectural layout of Chinese temples in detail and introducing the Shaolin Temple and Shaolin Kung Fu, I also introduced a person who has studied Shaolin Kung Fu since childhood, whose name is Shi Heng Yi. He is a monk of the European Shaolin Temple established in Germany. He is around forty years old, Asian, born and raised in Germany, and he speaks German and English.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u6211\u5011\u4e00\u8d77\u770b\u4e86\u4e00\u6bb5\u6046\u7fa9\u6cd5\u5e2b2020\u5e74\u53d7TED\u9080\u8acb\u800c\u4f5c\u7684\u6642\u957718\u5206\u9418\u7684\u6f14\u8b1b\uff0c\u984c\u76ee\u662f5&nbsp;Hindrances to&nbsp;Self-mastery\u969c\u7919\u81ea\u6211\u638c\u63a7\u7684\u4e94\u500b\u65b9\u9762\u3002\u6f14\u8b1b\u4ee5\u4ed6\u7684\u7ae5\u5e74\u751f\u6d3b\u958b\u59cb\uff0c\u4ed6\u6210\u9577\u5728\u4e00\u500b\u4e9e\u6d32\u5bb6\u5ead\u3002\u4e9e\u6d32\u5bb6\u5ead\u4f3c\u4e4e\u6709\u5169\u500b\u5171\u6027\uff1a\u4e00\u662f\u5b69\u5b50\u4e0d\u8ddf\u9577\u8f29\u9802\u5634\uff1b\u4e8c\u662f\u5bb6\u5ead\u5c0d\u5b69\u5b50\u672a\u4f86\u8077\u696d\u7684\u9810\u671f\u5927\u90fd\u50be\u5411\u65bc\u91ab\u751f\u3001\u5de5\u7a0b\u5e2b\u548c\u5f8b\u5e2b\u4e09\u500b\u65b9\u9762\u3002\u5728\u7236\u6bcd\u7684\u5b89\u6392\u4e0b\uff0c\u4ed6\u5f9e\u56db\u6b72\u8d77\u5c31\u672a\u9593\u65b7\u5730\u904e\u8457\u4e0a\u5b78\u3001\u5b78\u5c11\u6797\u529f\u592b\u548c\u56de\u5bb6\u9019\u6a23\u4e09\u9ede\u4e00\u7dda\u7684\u7c21\u55ae\u751f\u6d3b\u3002\u70ba\u4e86\u9054\u6210\u7236\u6bcd\u7684\u671f\u5f85\uff0c\u4ed6\u7372\u5f97\u4e86\u4e00\u7cfb\u5217\u7236\u6bcd\u8a8d\u70ba\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u8b49\u66f8\u548c\u5b78\u6b77\u3002\u5b78\u7fd2\u4e86\u5c0d\u5916\u5728\u5ba2\u89c0\u77e5\u8b58\u53ca\u4e8b\u7269\u7684\u8a8d\u77e5\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u610f\u8b58\u5230\u7f3a\u5931\u4e86\u4e00\u584a\u5167\u5bb9\uff0c\u90a3\u5c31\u53bb\u8a8d\u8b58\u81ea\u5df1\u3002\u800c\u4ed6\u5f9e\u56db\u6b72\u958b\u59cb\u63a5\u89f8\u7684\u8eab\u5fc3\u9748\u517c\u4fee\u7684\u5c11\u6797\u529f\u592b\uff0c\u7d66\u4e88\u4ed6\u5c0b\u6c42\u771f\u7406\u7684\u529b\u91cf\uff0c\u5f9e\u800c\u6700\u7d42\u6c92\u6709\u8d70\u5411\u5c31\u696d\u5e02\u5834\u53bb\u638c\u63e1\u4e16\u754c\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u7e7c\u7e8c\u4ed6\u7684\u4fee\u884c\uff0c\u6210\u70ba\u4e86\u4e00\u500b\u51fa\u5bb6\u4eba\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">We watched an 18-minute TEDtalk that Master Heng Yi gave in 2020, titled 5 Hindrances to Self-Mastery. The speech began with his childhood, growing up in an Asian family. Asian families almost always have two things in common: first, children do not talk back to their elders; second, families tend to expect that their children will become doctors, engineers, or lawyers in the future. Starting from when he was four, his parents arranged for him to live an extremely simple life of going to school, learning Shaolin Kung Fu, and going home. In order to fulfill his parents&#8217; expectations, he obtained a series of certificates and academic diplomas that his parents considered important. After learning about external objective knowledge, he realized he was missing something\u2014 that is knowing about self, who am I? The physical, mental, and spiritual Shaolin Kung Fu he had been practicing since the age of four gave him the power to seek the truth. In the end, he did not enter the job market or master the world, but continued his practice and became a monk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u6046\u7fa9\u6cd5\u5e2b\u88abTED\u9080\u8acb\u5206\u4eab\u7684\u8a71\u984c\u662f\u9019\u4e00\u751f\u4ec0\u9ebc\u624d\u662f\u91cd\u8981\u7684\u3002\u6cd5\u5e2b\u4ee5\u4e00\u500b\u60f3\u767b\u4e0a\u5c71\u9802\u537b\u59cb\u7d42\u6c92\u6709\u4ed8\u8af8\u884c\u52d5\u7684\u4eba\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u4f5c\u8b6c\u55bb\uff0c\u63cf\u8ff0\u4e86\u4e94\u7a2e\u969c\u7919\u6211\u5011\u770b\u6e05\u771f\u76f8\u7684\u5fc3\u5883\uff0c\u5b83\u5011\u662f\uff1a\u7b2c\u4e00\uff0c\u611f\u5b98\u617e\u671b\u9019\u4e00\u6b63\u5411\u60c5\u7dd2\uff1b\u7b2c\u4e8c\uff0c\u53ad\u60e1\u9019\u7a2e\u8ca0\u9762\u60c5\u7dd2\uff1b\u7b2c\u4e09\uff0c\u9072\u920d\/\u6d88\u6c89\u9019\u7a2e\u7981\u932e\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u60c5\u7dd2\uff1b\u7b2c\u56db\uff0c\u7126\u8e81\u4e0d\u5b89\uff0c\u9019\u7a2e\u4ee4\u5fc3\u7121\u8655\u5b89\u653e\u7684\u60c5\u7dd2\uff1b\u7b2c\u4e94\uff0c\u61f7\u7591\u7336\u8c6b\uff0c\u985e\u4f3c\u9047\u4e8b\u7336\u7591\u4e0d\u6c7a\u7684\u5fc3\u614b\u3002\u5728\u5206\u6790\u4e86\u9019\u4e94\u7a2e\u5fc3\u5883\u662f\u5982\u4f55\u4f5c\u7528\u800c\u969c\u7919\u6211\u5011\u7684\u5fc3\u6027\u4e4b\u5f8c\uff0c\u9019\u4f4d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u4fbf\u63d0\u51fa\u6d88\u9664\u5b83\u5011\u7684\u56db\u500b\u6b65\u9a5f\uff1a\u9996\u5148\uff0c\u8a8d\u8b58\u4e26\u767c\u73fe\u81ea\u5df1\u8655\u65bc\u4ec0\u9ebc\u6a23\u7684\u72c0\u614b\uff1b\u5176\u6b21\uff0c\u5b78\u6703\u63a5\u53d7\u3001\u627f\u8a8d\u4e26\u5141\u8a31\u4e00\u5207\u7684\u767c\u751f\uff1b\u7136\u5f8c\uff0c\u89c0\u5bdf\u4f60\u7684\u60c5\u7dd2\u548c\u72c0\u614b\u4e26\u554f\u81ea\u5df1\uff1a\u70ba\u4ec0\u9ebc\u6703\u51fa\u73fe\u9019\u7a2e\u60c5\u6cc1\uff1f\u5982\u679c\u6211\u505c\u7559\u5728\u9019\u7a2e\u72c0\u614b\u4e0b\uff0c\u6703\u9020\u6210\u4ec0\u9ebc\u5f8c\u679c\uff1f<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">DM Heng Yi was asked to share a few words on what was important in this life under the slogan of \u201cHigh, Higher, Highest.\u201d The master used the story of a person who was intended to reach the top of the mountain but never took action as an analogy to describe the five hindrances, which are describing different states of the mind. In those states of mind, it becomes very hard to see clearly and therefore engage in the right decisions. The first is Sensual Desire, which is a positive emotion; Second is ill-will\/aversion, which is a negative emotion; Third, dullness\/heaviness\u2014used similarly in Buddhism, which is described as \u201cimprisonment\u201d; Fourth, restlessness, a state of unsettled mind; Fifth, skeptical doubt, which is closely related to a state of mind that is based on indecisiveness. After knowing the five hindrances, what are we going to do about them? You need to align and structure your life in such a way to prevent them from arising. Therefore, DM Heng Yi gave four steps to remove the 5 hindrances: Recognize in what state of the mind that you are finding yourself in. Afterwards, learn to accept, acknowledge, and allow the situation or a person to be the way it is, to be the way they are. Investigate your emotional and mental state and ask questions. Why did it come up? What is important in this life? The master did not give a standard answer, but gave a method. When you use this method and clarify yourself, you will naturally be able to see the truth and know what is the most important thing in your life. Everyone is different and there is no way to copy others, so it is impossible to have a unified standard answer. That night, in my nightmare, I unconsciously recited the mantra, and suddenly the world became clean and tranquil, and the surroundings became clear. And when the mind is clear, everything becomes clear. With this clarity, you may find out what is important in your life. In fact, ever since I first came to Ukiah ten years ago and saw the entrance gate of CTTB, I began to embark on the journey of finding my mission in life. During this process, I was confused as to which of the 84,000 dharmas was the right path for me to take. By harmonizing their minds, their external temperament will also change.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u6b64\u5f8c\u90a3\u4e00\u500b\u5b78\u5e74\u5269\u4e0b\u7684\u6642\u9593\u9084\u767c\u751f\u4e00\u4e9b\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\uff0c\u4f46\u6c92\u6642\u9593\u5206\u4eab\u4e86\u3002\u6211\u5982\u662f\u5982\u5be6\u5730\u5728\u9019\u88e1\u8b1b\u8ff0\uff0c\u6b63\u662f\u60f3\u8868\u9054\u5c0d\u65bc\u8af8\u4f5b\u83e9\u85a9\u548c\u4e0a\u4eba\u7684\u5f15\u9818\u7684\u611f\u6069\u3002\u54ea\u6015\u6211\u4e0d\u81ea\u89ba\uff0c\u54ea\u6015\u6211\u5fd8\u8a18\u4e86\uff0c\u90fd\u6703\u4ee5\u5404\u7a2e\u65b9\u5f0f\u4f86\u559a\u9192\u6211\uff0c\u63d0\u9192\u6211\uff0c\u9019\u662f\u5c0d\u6211\u7684\u6bcf\u4e00\u9ede\u7528\u5fc3\u548c\u4ed8\u51fa\u7684\u56de\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u904e\u53bb\u7684\u5df2\u7d93\u904e\u53bb\uff0c\u65b0\u7684\u4e00\u5b78\u5e74\u958b\u59cb\u4e86\uff0c\u53ea\u8981\u6211\u5011\u4e00\u5fc3\u70ba\u4e86\u5b78\u751f\uff0c\u4ee4\u4ed6\u5011\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u7684\u5b78\u6821\u904e\u5f97\u5e78\u798f\uff0c\u904e\u5f97\u5145\u5be6\uff0c\u8eab\u5fc3\u5065\u5eb7\u6210\u9577\uff0c\u5728\u667a\u3001\u4ec1\u3001\u52c7\u4e09\u65b9\u9762\u5f97\u4ee5\u767c\u5c55\uff0c\u90a3\u6709\u8da3\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u5c31\u4e00\u5b9a\u9084\u6703\u7e8c\u5beb\u3002\u201c\u77e5\u8005\u4e0d\u60d1\uff0c\u4ec1\u8005\u4e0d\u6182\uff0c\u52c7\u8005\u4e0d\u61fc\u201d\uff0c\u6211\u5e0c\u671b\u81ea\u5df1\u548c\u5b78\u751f\u5011\u90fd\u5728\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u6210\u9577\u7232\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u4eba\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There were more interesting things that happened during the rest of the school year, but I don\u2019t have time to share them. I tell you all these things here to express my gratitude for the guidance of the Buddhas, Bodhisattvas and VM. Even if I am not aware of it, even if I have forgotten it, it will wake me up in various ways and remind me that these things are a response to my every effort.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The past is the past, and a new school year has begun. During my ordination this summer, my eldest daughter Zhou Yuan, the senior high school student next to me who is translating, went to a two-week youth camp organized by DRBU at the Sudhana Center. This was the first time DRBU had hosted a youth camp of this sort, and the theme was contemplative philosophy. The day Zhou Yuan went there, she had a low fever. I was worried that she wouldn&#8217;t adapt, but on the third day she wrote an email telling me that she had a great first few days. Although she was a little too busy, and there was not enough time to complete the online courses she was taking at other universities, this youth camp was fun and engaging. The moment I read this, I felt relieved. Zhou Yuan has participated in the girls&#8217; school summer camp every year from when she was eight up until the pandemic. Now that she is older and cannot attend the girls&#8217; school summer camp, it is so valuable to be able to experience the activities at DRBU. In the future, children over 14 years old can still come to the City of Ten Thousand Buddhas during summer vacation, and parents can continue to practice here.&nbsp;Ten years ago, it was through the summer activities in the Girl\u2019s School that I entered the CTTB, entered Buddhism, and later entered the Boys\u2019 school and entered inner self.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>\u4eca\u665a\u7684\u5206\u4eab\u5c31\u5230\u9019\u88e1\uff0c\u9858\u6211\u7684\u5206\u4eab\u80fd\u5229\u76ca\u773e\u751f\u3002\u5982\u679c\u6709\u4e0d\u5982\u6cd5\u7684\u5730\u65b9\uff0c\u8acb\u4efb\u4f55\u6642\u5019\u898b\u5230\u6211\uff0c\u5c31\u4f86\u63d0\u9192\u6211\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">My speech for tonight ends here.
