Tonight is Bhikshuni Jin Zheng\u2019s turn to tie Dharma affinities with the assembly that has gathered for the Guanyin Session and also to honor Universal Worthy Bodhisattva\u2019s Birthday.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u8af8\u4f5b\u83e9\u85a9\u3001\u6148\u60b2\u7684\u4e0a\u4eba\u3001\u5404\u4f4d\u5584\u77e5\u8b58\uff1a\u963f\u5f4c\u9640\u4f5b\u3002\u4eca\u665a\u8f2a\u5230\u6bd4\u4e18\u5c3c\u8fd1\u8b49\u548c\u53c3\u52a0\u89c0\u97f3\u6cd5\u6703\u7684\u5927\u773e\u7d50\u6cd5\u7de3\uff0c\u540c\u6642\u6211\u5011\u4eca\u5929\u4e5f\u6176\u795d\u666e\u8ce2\u738b\u83e9\u85a9\u7684\u8056\u8a95\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n

I\u2019m currently a first year graduate student at Dharma Realm Buddhist University. When I first started writing this talk, I told one of my Dharma brothers that I was going to share a reading list of all of the sutras in which Guanyin, also known as Avalokiteshvara in Sanskrit, Bodhisattva appears.  Then I realized that I was going to be speaking Universal Worthy or Universal Conduct, who is also known as Samantabhadra in Sanskrit, Bodhisattva.  Don\u2019t worry I\u2019m not going to give you two reading lists.  I\u2019m going to give you a short reading list, which has four Mahayana sutras, in which both Bodhisattvas appear. Can you guess which sutras these will be before I name them?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u76ee\u524d\u5c31\u8b80\u6cd5\u754c\u4f5b\u6559\u5927\u5b78\u7814\u7a76\u751f\u4e00\u5e74\u7d1a\u3002\u7576\u6211\u958b\u59cb\u6e96\u5099\u4eca\u5929\u9019\u500b\u8a71\u984c\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u7684\u4e00\u4f4d\u5e2b\u5144\uff0c\u6211\u6253\u7b97\u5206\u4eab\u4e00\u4efd\u89c0\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u51fa\u73fe\u5728\u6240\u6709\u7d93\u5178\u7684\u95b1\u8b80\u6e05\u55ae\u3002\u5f8c\u4f86\u6211\u610f\u8b58\u5230\uff0c\u6211\u4eca\u5929\u5176\u5be6\u8981\u8b1b\u7684\u662f\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u3002\u4e0d\u904e\u5225\u64d4\u5fc3\uff0c\u6211\u4e0d\u6703\u7d66\u4f60\u5011\u5169\u4efd\u4f5b\u5178\u6e05\u55ae\u3002\u6211\u5217\u4e86\u4e00\u4efd\u7c21\u77ed\u7684\u6e05\u55ae\uff0c\u5217\u51fa\u4e86\u56db\u90e8\u5927\u4e58\u7d93\u5178\uff0c\u89c0\u4e16\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u548c\u666e\u8ce2\u738b\u83e9\u85a9\u9019\u5169\u4f4d\u83e9\u85a9\u90fd\u5728\u9019\u4e9b\u7d93\u5178\u4e2d\u51fa\u73fe\u3002\u5728\u6211\u8aaa\u51fa\u9019\u4e9b\u7d93\u5178\u7684\u540d\u5b57\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u4f60\u5011\u80fd\u731c\u5230\u662f\u54ea\u5e7e\u90e8\u55ce\uff1f<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Lotus Sutra<\/em>. (Guanyin Bodhisattva appears in the Universal Door Chapter – Chapter 25 – which we recite every day of the session twice a day.  Universal Worthy Bodhisattva appears in the epilogue, the very last chapter of the sutra titled \u201cCh 28 – Bodhisattva Samantabhadra\u2019s Encouragement\u201d. If you want to meet Samantabhadra Bodhisattva, recite this sutra single-mindedly.  Whether walking, standing, or sitting it says that he will appear before you.  It gives his mantra which he uses to protect and support those who recite the Lotus Sutra. )<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7b2c\u4e00\u90e8\u662f\u300a\u6cd5\u83ef\u7d93\u300b\u3002\uff08\u89c0\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u51fa\u73fe\u5728\u300a\u6cd5\u83ef\u7d93\u7b2c\u4e8c\u5341\u4e94\u54c1<\/strong>\u2014\u2014<\/strong>\u3008\u666e\u9580\u54c1\u3009\u88e1\u9762\u3002\u6211\u5011\u5728\u9019\u500b\u89c0\u97f3\u6cd5\u6703\u671f\u9593\u6bcf\u5929\u8aa6\u5ff5\u5169\u6b21\u3002\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u5247\u51fa\u73fe\u5728\u7d93\u6587\u7684\u7d50\u5c3e\u90e8\u5206\uff0c\u4e5f\u5c31\u662f\u7b2c\u4e8c\u5341\u516b\u54c1\u3008\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u52f8\u767c\u54c1\u3009\u3002\u5982\u679c\u4f60\u60f3\u898b\u5230\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\uff0c\u8acb\u5c08\u5fc3\u8aa6\u6301\u9019\u90e8\u300a\u6cd5\u83ef\u7d93\u300b\u3002\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u8aaa\uff0c\u7121\u8ad6\u662f\u884c\u4f4f\u5750\u81e5\uff0c\u4ed6\u90fd\u6703\u51fa\u73fe\u5728\u4f60\u9762\u524d\u3002\u7d93\u6587\u9084\u63d0\u4f9b\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u7684\u5492\u8a9e\uff0c\u7528\u4f86\u8b77\u6301\u8aa6\u6301\u300a\u6cd5\u83ef\u7d93\u300b\u7684\u884c\u8005\u3002<\/strong>\uff09<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


The Shurangama Sutra<\/em>. (Universal Worthy Bodhisattva is called Universal Goodness Bodhisattva in the most recent translation.  He is number 13 of the 25 sages who speak of how they certified to the way.  It is with his ear-consciousness that he is aware of all the thoughts and viewpoints of living beings, and with his mind he listens with complete understanding and discernment.  Guanyin Bodhisattva practices through the Dharma door of hearing and contemplating. Isn\u2019t it wonderful that they are both connected with the ear and listening as their practice?)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7b2c\u4e8c\u90e8\u300a\u695e\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u3002\uff08\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u5728\u6700\u65b0\u7684\u82f1\u8b6f\u672c\u4e2d\u88ab\u7a31\u70ba\u300c\u666e\u5584\u83e9\u85a9\u300d\u3002\u4ed6\u662f\u4e8c\u5341\u4e94\u4f4d\u8056\u8005\u4e2d\u7684\u7b2c\u5341\u4e09\u4f4d\uff0c\u8b1b\u8ff0\u4e86\u81ea\u5df1\u5982\u4f55\u7372\u5f97\u8b49\u609f\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u3002\u4ed6\u901a\u904e\u8033\u8b58\u4f86\u89ba\u77e5\u4e00\u5207\u773e\u751f\u7684\u601d\u60f3\u548c\u89c0\u9ede\uff0c\u4e26\u4ee5\u5fc3\u53bb\u7406\u89e3\u8207\u8fa8\u5225\u3002\u89c0\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u5247\u901a\u904e\u300c\u805e\u601d\u4fee\u300d\u7684\u6cd5\u9580\u4fee\u884c\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u5169\u4f4d\u7684\u4fee\u884c\u6cd5\u9580\u90fd\u8207\u300c\u8033\u300d\u548c\u300c\u807d\u300d\u6709\u95dc\uff0c\u9019\u4e0d\u662f\u5f88\u5947\u5999\u55ce\uff1f\uff09<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Earth Store Sutra<\/em>. They both also request the Dharma from the Buddha and ask questions in the Earth Store Sutra. (Universal Worthy Bodhisattva asks the Buddha to tell the names of the hells, and the retributions for offenses committed in Chapter 5. In Chapter 12, Guanyin Bodhisattva praises Earth Store Bodhisattva for his great compassion and pity for those beings who are suffering for their negative karma.  She beseeches the Buddha to \u201cpraise the inconceivable events pertaining to Earth Store Bodhisattva for the sake of beings in the present and future and to cause the gods, dragons, and the rest of the eightfold division to gaze at him in worship and obtain blessings.\u201d)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7b2c\u4e09\u90e8\u662f\u5730\u85cf\u7d93\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u5169\u4f4d\u4e5f\u90fd\u5728\u300a\u5730\u85cf\u7d93\u300b\u4e2d\u5411\u4f5b\u9640\u8acb\u6cd5\u4e26\u63d0\u554f\u3002\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u5728\u7b2c\u4e94\u54c1\uff08\u5730\u7344\u540d\u865f\u54c1\uff09\u4e2d\u5411\u4f5b\u9640\u8acb\u6cd5\uff0c\u8acb\u4f5b\u8b1b\u8ff0\u5730\u7344\u7684\u540d\u7a31\u4ee5\u53ca\u773e\u751f\u9020\u60e1\u696d\u7684\u679c\u5831\u3002\u5728\u7b2c\u5341\u4e8c\u54c1\uff08\u898b\u805e\u5229\u76ca\u54c1\uff09\u4e2d\uff0c\u89c0\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u8b9a\u6b4e\u5730\u85cf\u83e9\u85a9\u5c0d\u90a3\u4e9b\u56e0\u60e1\u696d\u53d7\u82e6\u7684\u773e\u751f\u6240\u5c55\u73fe\u7684\u5927\u6148\u5927\u60b2\u3002\u5979\u61c7\u8acb\u4f5b\u9640\u70ba\u73fe\u5728\u53ca\u672a\u4f86\u7684\u773e\u751f\u8b9a\u6b4e\u5730\u85cf\u83e9\u85a9\u7684\u4e0d\u53ef\u601d\u8b70\uff0c\u4e26\u8b93\u5929\u9f8d\u516b\u90e8\u5c0d\u5730\u85cf\u83e9\u85a9\u77bb\u4ef0\u79ae\u62dc\uff0c\u7372\u5f97\u83e9\u85a9\u7684\u52a0\u6301\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


Most especially you should read the Avatamsaka Sutra<\/em>\u2019s Chapter 39 and 40. You can find the text on cttbusa.org<\/a> under Buddhadharma and then Sutra Texts. You can read about how the Youth Sudhana goes to Manjushri Bodhisattva to learn how to practice the Bodhisattva path, and after he has been directed to 53 teachers, Manjushri pulls him across time and space to spend time with Universal Worthy Bodhisattva to complete Sudhana\u2019s certification.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u7279\u5225\u63a8\u85a6\u4f60\u5011\u95b1\u8b80\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u7684\u7b2c\u4e09\u5341\u4e5d\u54c1\uff08\u5165\u6cd5\u754c\u54c1\uff09\u548c\u7b2c\u56db\u5341\u54c1\uff08\u666e\u8ce2\u884c\u9858\u54c1\uff09\u3002\u4f60\u53ef\u4ee5\u5728<\/strong>cttbusa.org<\/strong>\u7684\u300c\u4f5b\u6cd5\u300d\u6b04\u76ee\u4e0b\u7684\u300c\u7d93\u5178\u300d\u4e2d\u627e\u5230\u9019\u4e9b\u5167\u5bb9\u3002\u4f60\u53ef\u4ee5\u8b80\u5230\u5584\u8ca1\u7ae5\u5b50\u5982\u4f55\u5411\u6587\u6b8a\u83e9\u85a9\u5b78\u7fd2\u4fee\u6301\u83e9\u85a9\u9053\uff0c\u5584\u8ca1\u7ae5\u5b50\u5728\u53c3\u8a2a\u4e86\u4e94\u5341\u4e09\u4f4d\u5584\u77e5\u8b58\u5f8c\uff0c\u6587\u6b8a\u83e9\u85a9\u8de8\u8d8a\u6642\u7a7a\u5c07\u4ed6\u5e36\u5230\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u8eab\u908a\uff0c\u5b8c\u6210\u5584\u8ca1\u7ae5\u5b50\u7684\u8b49\u609f\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n


But the sutra text, I will mention tonight comes from the last chapter of the
Avatamsaka Sutra<\/em>, also known as the Flower Adornment Sutra<\/em>, The Chapter on Entering the Inconceivable State of Liberation of the Conduct and Vows of Universal Worthy Bodhisattva.
\u4f46\u4eca\u665a\u6211\u8981\u63d0\u5230\u7684\u7d93\u6587\u662f\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u7684\u6700\u5f8c\u4e00\u54c1\uff0c\u4e5f\u88ab\u7a31\u70ba\u300a\u5927\u65b9\u5ee3\u4f5b\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u7684\u3008\u5165\u4e0d\u601d\u8b70\u89e3\u812b\u5883\u754c\u666e\u8ce2\u884c\u9858\u54c1\u3009\u3002(\u842c\u4f5b\u57ce\u6bcf\u9031\u516d\u65e9\u4e0a\u6703\u8aa6\u9019\u4e00\u54c1\u3002)<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Every morning at morning ceremony, we recite Universal Worthy\u2019s ten vows:
\u201cThe first is to worship and respect all Buddhas;
the second is to praise the Thus Come Ones;
the third is to extensively cultivate making offerings;
the fourth is to repent of karmic obstacles and reform;
the fifth is to follow along with and rejoice in merit and virtue;
the sixth is to request the turning of the Dharma wheel;
the seventh is to request that the Buddhas remain in the world;
the eighth is to always study with the Buddhas;
the ninth is to constantly accord with living beings;
the tenth is universally transfer all merit and virtue.  (Avatamsaka Dharmas, 7)<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But I myself didn\u2019t come to really know Universal Worthy Bodhisattva, until I discovered this book, on the book table in 2015. Before reading this, I only knew he was a great Bodhisattva who rode an elephant with six tusks and liked to spend time with Manjushri Bodhisattva.  I felt I knew a lot about Guanyin Bodhisattva and Earth Store Bodhisattva, but I hadn\u2019t truly met this Bodhisattva until I was able to read the English translation of this chapter from the Avatamsaka Sutra<\/em>.

I read this passage and I felt like I had been struck by lightning:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u76f4\u5230<\/strong>2015<\/strong>\u5e74\u5728\u7d50\u7de3\u66f8\u684c\u4e0a\u767c\u73fe\u9019\u672c\u66f8\u6642\uff08\u6cd5\u754c\u4f5b\u6559\u7e3d\u67031999\u5e74\u51fa\u7248\u7684\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u666e\u8ce2\u884c\u9858\u54c1\u300b\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u666e\u8ce2\u884c\u9858\u61fa\u5100\u300b\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u758f\u5e8f\u300b\u5408\u96c6\uff09\uff0c\u624d\u958b\u59cb\u771f\u6b63\u8a8d\u8b58\u666e\u8ce2\u83e9\u85a9\u3002\u5728\u6b64\u4e4b\u524d\uff0c\u6211\u53ea\u77e5\u9053\u4ed6\u662f\u4e00\u4f4d\u9a0e\u8457\u516d\u7259\u767d\u8c61\u3001\u5e38\u8207\u6587\u6b8a\u83e9\u85a9\u76f8\u4f34\u7684\u5927\u83e9\u85a9\u3002\u6211\u89ba\u5f97\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u4e4b\u524d\u5c0d\u89c0\u97f3\u83e9\u85a9\u548c\u5730\u85cf\u83e9\u85a9\u4e86\u89e3\u66f4\u591a\uff0c\u4f46\u76f4\u5230\u6211\u8b80\u5230\u300a\u83ef\u56b4\u7d93\u300b\u9019\u4e00\u54c1\u7684\u82f1\u6587\u7ffb\u8b6f\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u624d\u771f\u6b63\u9047\u898b\u4e86\u9019\u4f4d\u83e9\u85a9\u3002<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u6211\u8b80\u5230\u9019\u6bb5\u7d93\u6587\u6642\uff0c\u611f\u89ba\u81ea\u5df1\u5f77\u5f7f\u88ab\u9583\u96fb\u64ca\u4e2d\uff1a<\/strong>

With regard to  \u201cconstantly according with living beings,\u201d he further says:
\u201cI will accord with and take care of all these many kinds of beings, providing all manner of services and offerings for them. I will treat them with the same respect I show my own parents, teachers, elders, arhats, and even the Thus Come Ones. I will serve them all equally and without difference.  I will be a good doctor for the sick and suffering. I will lead those who have lost their way to the right road. I will be a bright light for those in the dark night, and cause the poor and destitute to uncover hidden treasures. A Bodhisattva impartially benefits all living beings in this manner. Why is this? If a Bodhisattva accords with living beings, then he accords with and makes offerings to all Buddhas. If he can honor and serve living beings, then he honors and serves the Thus Come Ones. If he makes living beings happy, he is making all Thus Come Ones happy.  Why is this? It is because all Buddhas, Thus Come Ones, take the mind of great compassion as their substance. Because of living beings they bring forth great compassion. From great compassion the Bodhi mind is born; and because of the resolve for Bodhi, they accomplish equal and proper enlightenment. It is like the great king of trees growing in the rocks and sand of a barren wilderness. When the roots get water, the branches, leaves, flowers and fruits will all flourish. The Bodhi-tree king growing in the wilderness of birth and death is the same. All living beings comprise its roots; all Buddhas and Bodhisattvas comprise its flowers and fruits. By benefiting all beings with the water of great compassion, one can realize the flowers and fruits of the Buddhas\u2019 and Bodhisattvas\u2019 wisdom. Why is this? If Bodhisattvas benefit living beings with the water of great compassion, they themselves can attain anuttarasamyaksambodhi. Therefore, Bodhi belongs to living beings. Without living beings, no Bodhisattva could perfect the unsurpassed proper enlightenment. (Avatamsaka Dharmas, 1999, 33 – 36)\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And I thought, yes, this is how I want to learn to practice the Bodhisattva path.  This resonates in every fiber of my being. I want to express my gratitude for all those who translated these sutras into English so that those of us who speak English might have the opportunity to encounter and read them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
