All Buddhas, Bodhisattvas, Venerable Master Hsuan Hua, Dharma Masters, and Dharma friends, Amitofo!<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u53eb\u9773\u6dfc\uff0c\u662f\u80b2\u826f\u5c0f\u5b78\u5973\u6821\u7684\u8001\u5e2b\u3002\u5b78\u751f\u5011\u5e73\u5e38\u7a31\u547c\u6211\u70ba\u6dfc\u8001\u5e2b\u3002\u4eca\u5e74\u662f\u6211\u5728\u80b2\u826f\u5c0f\u5b78\u57f7\u6559\u7684\u7b2c\u4e94\u5e74\u3002\u524d\u5e7e\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u4e3b\u8981\u662f\u79d1\u4efb\u8001\u5e2b\uff0c\u6559\u6578\u5b78\u548c\u4e2d\u6587\uff1b\u4eca\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u6559\u4e8c\u3001\u4e09\u5e74\u7d1a\u5408\u73ed\uff0c\u64d4\u4efb\u73ed\u5c0e\u5e2b\uff0c\u8ca0\u8cac\u5168\u79d1\u76ee\u7684\u6559\u5b78\u3002\u4eca\u5929\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u85c9\u9019\u500b\u6cd5\u7de3\uff0c\u8ddf\u5927\u5bb6\u5206\u4eab\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u4f86\uff0c\u5728\u80b2\u826f\u5c0f\u5b78\u6559\u5b78\u7684\u5fc3\u8def\u6b77\u7a0b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

My name is Miao Sandel, and I teach at the Girls Elementary School. My students usually call me Ms. Miao. This is my fifth year teaching at IGDVS. In the past few years, I mainly taught as a subject teacher, teaching math and Chinese. This year, I am teaching a combined second and third grade class as the core teacher, teach all subjects. Today, I would like to take this opportunity to share my reflection of working at IGDVS.<\/p>\n\n\n

\u525b\u958b\u59cb\u6559\u4e8c\u3001\u4e09\u5e74\u7d1a\u5408\u73ed\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u5fc3\u88e1\u662f\u6709\u58d3\u529b\u7684\u3002\u6bcf\u5929\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u8ab2\u7a0b\u3001\u5f88\u591a\u6d3b\u52d5\uff0c\u4e5f\u6709\u5f88\u591a\u4e8b\u60c5\u8981\u8655\u7406\u3002\u548c\u4ee5\u524d\u7684\u5de5\u4f5c\u8207\u751f\u6d3b\u76f8\u6bd4\uff0c\u4eca\u5e74\u7684\u7bc0\u594f\u5feb\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\uff0c\u5f37\u5ea6\u4e5f\u9ad8\u4e86\u8a31\u591a\u3002\u4e5f\u6b63\u662f\u5728\u9019\u7a2e\u9ad8\u5f37\u5ea6\u7684\u72c0\u614b\u4e0b\uff0c\u6211\u770b\u5230\u4e86\u8a31\u591a\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7169\u60f1\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I first began teaching the combined second and third grade class, I felt pressure in my heart. Every day there were many lessons, many activities, and<\/p>\n\n\n\n

many responsibilities to take care of. Compared with my work and life before, this year had a much faster pace and a much heavier intensity. It was exactly under this intensity that I began to see many of my own afflictions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4eca\u5e74\u662f\u6211\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b21\u5168\u5929\u6559\u4f4e\u5e74\u7d1a\u5b78\u751f\u3002\u9019\u500b\u7d93\u9a57\u548c\u6211\u904e\u53bb\u4e3b\u8981\u6559\u9ad8\u5e74\u7d1a\u6578\u5b78\u3001\u4e2d\u6587\u7684\u7d93\u9a57\u5f88\u4e0d\u4e00\u6a23\u3002\u4f4e\u5e74\u7d1a\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\uff0c\u9084\u9700\u8981\u7279\u5225\u7d30\u5fc3\u5730\u5b78\u7fd2\u8a8d\u5b57\u3001\u5beb\u5b57\u3001\u807d\u6307\u793a\u3001\u6574\u7406\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u4e5f\u9700\u8981\u4e00\u904d\u53c8\u4e00\u904d\u5730\u7df4\u7fd2\u6700\u57fa\u672c\u7684\u5b78\u7fd2\u7fd2\u6163\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year is my first time teaching younger elementary students all day. This experience is very different from my previous experience of mainly teaching math and Chinese to older students. Younger children still need very careful guidance in reading, writing, following directions, organizing their belongings, and practicing the most basic learning habits again and again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240\u4ee5\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\uff0c\u6211\u6162\u6162\u9ad4\u6703\u5230\u4f4e\u5e74\u7d1a\u8001\u5e2b\u7684\u8f9b\u82e6\u5e38\u5e38\u662f\u300c\u6f64\u7269\u7121\u8072\u300d\u7684\u3002\u9ad8\u5e74\u7d1a\u5b78\u751f\u4e4b\u6240\u4ee5\u80fd\u5b78\u5f97\u6bd4\u8f03\u9806\uff0c\u662f\u56e0\u70ba\u524d\u9762\u7684\u8001\u5e2b\u5df2\u7d93\u82b1\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u6642\u9593\u548c\u5fc3\u8840\uff0c\u5e6b\u52a9\u4ed6\u5011\u6253\u4e0b\u7d2e\u5be6\u7684\u6839\u57fa\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year, I have come to deeply appreciate the teachers who choose to teach young kids.  When older students seem easier to teach, it is often because the teachers before have already spent so much time, patience, and care helping them build a strong foundation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u518d\u770b\u770b\u81ea\u5df1\uff0c\u5728\u6559\u4f4e\u5e74\u7d1a\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5fc3\u5e38\u5e38\u662f\u5f88\u6d6e\u8e81\u7684\u3002\u6709\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4e00\u500b\u5b69\u5b50\u4e0d\u6703\u5beb\u5b8c\u6574\u53e5\u5b50\uff0c\u6211\u770b\u5230\u7684\u662f\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u6025\uff1b\u6709\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4e00\u500b\u5b69\u5b50\u5fd8\u8a18\u898f\u5247\uff0c\u6211\u770b\u5230\u7684\u662f\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4e0d\u8010\u7169\uff1b\u6709\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5b69\u5b50\u4e4b\u9593\u6709\u885d\u7a81\uff0c\u6211\u770b\u5230\u7684\u662f\u81ea\u5df1\u60f3\u99ac\u4e0a\u63a7\u5236\u5c40\u9762\u7684\u7fd2\u6163\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I look at myself, I also see that while teaching younger children, my<\/p>\n\n\n\n

own mind was often restless and impatient. Sometimes, when a child could not write a complete sentence, what I saw was my own impatience.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sometimes, when a child forgot a rule, what I saw was my own frustration. Sometimes, when children had conflicts, what I saw was my habit of wanting to control the situation immediately<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5b78\u751f\u5176\u5be6\u662f\u7167\u51fa\u6211\u7684\u6025\u8e81\u3001\u6211\u7684\u63a7\u5236\u7fd2\u6c23\uff0c\u9084\u6709\u6211\u7684\u5206\u5225\u5fc3\u3002\u9019\u4e9b\u60c5\u6cc1\u90fd\u5728\u958b\u5b78\u7684\u7b2c\u4e00\u500b\u6708\u986f\u73fe\u51fa\u4f86\u3002\u6211\u770b\u898b\u81ea\u5df1\u5fc3\u88e1\u7684\u6025\u8e81\uff0c\u4e5f\u770b\u5230\u81ea\u5df1\u548c\u5b78\u751f\u5e38\u5e38\u662f\u6191\u8457\u672c\u80fd\u53cd\u61c9\u5728\u8aaa\u8a71\u3001\u505a\u4e8b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Later, I slowly realized that the students were actually reflecting back to me my impatience, my need for control, and my discriminating mind. These situations and realization appeared during the first month of school. I saw the restlessness in my own mind, and I also saw that both the students and I often spoke and acted from instinctive or conditionedreactions. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u90a3\u6642\u5019\u958b\u59cb\u60f3\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u5e0c\u671b\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u904e\u5f97\u6bd4\u8f03\u9806\u5229\uff0c\u6211\u4e0d\u80fd\u53ea\u5f9e\u6559\u5b78\u7ba1\u7406\u7684\u65b9\u6cd5\u4e0a\u60f3\u8fa6\u6cd5\uff0c\u66f4\u8981\u5f9e\u89c0\u7167\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5fc3\u3001\u5e6b\u52a9\u81ea\u5df1\u548c\u5b78\u751f\u8a8d\u8b58\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5ff5\u982d\u627e\u65b9\u6cd5\u3002\u6709\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u60f3\u6cd5\u4ee5\u5f8c\uff0c\u5f88\u5feb\u5c31\u6709\u56e0\u7de3\u770b\u5230\u6cd5\u5927\u88fd\u4f5c\u7684\u4e00\u500b\u77ed\u7247\uff0c\u8b1b\u7684\u662f\u5728\u975c\u5750\u4e2d\u600e\u6a23\u89c0\u5bdf\u5ff5\u982d\u3002\u77ed\u7247\u88e1\u628a\u4e00\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u6bd4\u55bb\u6210\u4e00\u500b\u9ede\uff0c\u628a\u4eba\u7684\u672c\u80fd\u53cd\u61c9\u6bd4\u55bb\u70ba\u9264\u5b50\u3002\u9019\u500b\u6bd4\u55bb\u5c0d\u6211\u4f86\u8aaa\u975e\u5e38\u6e05\u695a\uff0c\u4e5f\u975e\u5e38\u5f62\u8c61\u5316\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

At that time, I began to think: if I wanted the year to go more smoothly, I could not only look for classroom management techniques. I also needed to look for ways to observe my own mind and help both myself and the students understand our own thoughts.  After this thought arose, I soon came across a short video produced by DRBU about how to observe<\/p>\n\n\n\n

thoughts during meditation.  In the video, a thought was shown as a dot, and a person\u2019s reaction was portrayed as a hook. This image was very clear and vivid for me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u539f\u4f86\u5f88\u591a\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4e0d\u662f\u4e8b\u60c5\u672c\u8eab\u628a\u6211\u5011\u5e36\u8d70\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u8d77\u4f86\u4ee5\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u99ac\u4e0a\u88ab\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u7fd2\u6c23\u52fe\u4f4f\u4e86\u3002\u5728\u770b\u5b8c\u6cd5\u5927\u77ed\u7247\u7684\u7b2c\u4e8c\u5929\uff0c\u65e9\u6668\u7b2c\u4e00\u7bc0\u7684\u6253\u5750\u8ab2\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u628a\u9019\u5f35\u5716\u7247\u756b\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u8b1b\u7d66\u5b78\u751f\u807d\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I realized that many times, it is not the situation itself that carries us away. Rather, once a thought arises, we are immediately hooked by our own<\/p>\n\n\n\n

habits. The next day after I watched the DRBU\u2019s meditation video, during meditation class, I drew this image and explained it to the students.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u4e00\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u51fa\u73fe\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u6211\u5011\u99ac\u4e0a\u88ab\u9264\u5b50\u52fe\u4f4f\uff0c\u5c31\u6703\u7acb\u523b\u8aaa\u8a71\u3001\u7acb\u523b\u751f\u6c23\u3001\u7acb\u523b\u505a\u51fa\u53cd\u61c9\u3002\u53ef\u662f\u5982\u679c\u6211\u5011\u80fd\u5920\u5148\u505c\u4e0b\u4f86\uff0c\u89ba\u5bdf\u9019\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\uff0c\u518d\u9078\u64c7\u600e\u6a23\u56de\u61c9\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u5c31\u4e0d\u4e00\u5b9a\u8981\u88ab\u5b83\u5e36\u8457\u8d70\u3002\u6700\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u7e3d\u7d50\u51fa\u4e00\u500b\u5f88\u7c21\u55ae\u7684\u53e3\u865f\uff1a\u505c\u4e00\u505c\uff0c\u770b\u4e00\u770b\uff0c\u518d\u9078\u64c7\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a thought appears, if we are immediately caught by the hook, we<\/p>\n\n\n\n

may speak right away, become angry right away, or react right away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But if we can pause first, notice the thought, and then choose how to respond, we do not have to be carried away by it.  In the end, we summarized it into a very simple motto: pause,  notice, choose.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u4e00\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u88ab\u9264\u5b50\u52fe\u4f4f\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5148\u8b93\u81ea\u5df1\u505c\u4e0b\u4f86\uff1b\u7136\u5f8c\u89ba\u5bdf\u9019\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\uff0c\u770b\u770b\u81ea\u5df1\u73fe\u5728\u662f\u751f\u6c23\u3001\u5bb3\u6015\u3001\u59d4\u5c48\uff0c\u9084\u662f\u60f3\u8b49\u660e\u81ea\u5df1\uff1b\u6700\u5f8c\u518d\u9078\u64c7\u8981\u4e0d\u8981\u56de\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5982\u679c\u4e0d\u9700\u8981\u56de\u61c9\uff0c\u5c31\u8b93\u9019\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u98c4\u904e\u53bb\uff1b\u5982\u679c\u5fc5\u9808\u56de\u61c9\uff0c\u5c31\u9078\u64c7\u4e00\u500b\u4ee5\u7f8e\u5fb7\u70ba\u57fa\u790e\u7684\u56de\u61c9\uff0c\u7528\u6148\u60b2\u3001\u5c0a\u91cd\u3001\u8aa0\u5be6\u548c\u8010\u5fc3\u4f86\u56de\u7b54\uff0c\u800c\u4e0d\u662f\u53ea\u662f\u8ddf\u8457\u7fd2\u6c23\u53cd\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When a thought gets caught by the hook, first pause. Then notice the thought and see whether we are feeling angry, afraid, hurt, or wanting to prove ourselves.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Finally, choose whether a response is needed. If no response is needed, we can let the thought float away. If a response is necessary, then we can choose a virtue-based response, responding with compassion, respect, honesty, and patience, instead of simply reacting from habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5b69\u5b50\u5011\u5f88\u5feb\u5c31\u63a5\u53d7\u4e86\u9019\u500b\u65b9\u6cd5\u3002\u6bcf\u5929\u65e9\u6668\u7684\u975c\u5750\u8ab2\u4e0a\uff0c\u6211\u5011\u90fd\u6703\u4e00\u904d\u4e00\u904d\u5730\u56de\u9867\u9019\u500b\u9ede\u548c\u9264\u5b50\u7684\u5716\u50cf\u3002\u5728\u4e00\u6574\u5929\u88e1\uff0c\u4e5f\u6703\u85c9\u8457\u5404\u7a2e\u4e8b\u60c5\uff0c\u4e00\u8d77\u7df4\u7fd2\u300c\u505c\u4e00\u505c\uff0c\u770b\u4e00\u770b\uff0c\u518d\u9078\u64c7\u300d\u3002\u6162\u6162\u5730\uff0c\u6211\u767c\u73fe\u6559\u5ba4\u88e1\u7684\u6c23\u6c1b\u8b8a\u5f97\u66f4\u5b89\u5b9a\uff0c\u5b69\u5b50\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u95dc\u4fc2\u4e5f\u66f4\u548c\u8ae7\u4e86\u3002\u5373\u4f7f\u5f8c\u4f86\u51fa\u73fe\u77db\u76fe\uff0c\u6216\u662f\u767c\u751f\u4e00\u4e9b\u5c0f\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u5b78\u751f\u4e5f\u80fd\u7528\u9019\u500b\u65b9\u6cd5\u4f86\u53cd\u601d\u548c\u56de\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The children accepted this method very quickly. Every morning during meditation class, were viewed the image of the dot and the hook again and again. Throughout the day, we used different situations to practice \u201cpause, notice, choose\u201d together.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Little by little, I noticed that the atmosphere in the classroom became calmer, and the relationships among the students became much more harmonious. Even when conflicts later arose or small problems occurred, the students were able to use this method to reflect and respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5728\u6bcf\u5929\u5e36\u8457\u5b69\u5b50\u7df4\u7fd2\u9019\u500b\u65b9\u6cd5\u7684\u904e\u7a0b\u4e2d\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u8d8a\u4f86\u8d8a\u6e05\u695a\u5730\u767c\u73fe\uff0c\u5728\u6559\u5ba4\u88e1\u6700\u9700\u8981\u7df4\u7fd2\u300c\u505c\u4e00\u505c\uff0c\u770b\u4e00\u770b\uff0c\u518d\u9078\u64c7\u300d\u7684\u4eba\uff0c\u5e38\u5e38\u4e0d\u662f\u5b69\u5b50\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u3002\u751f\u6d3b\u4e2d\u5f88\u591a\u4e8b\u60c5\u767c\u751f\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u4e0d\u662f\u5148\u770b\u6e05\u695a\u4e8b\u60c5\u672c\u8eab\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5148\u6389\u9032\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u60f3\u6cd5\u88e1\u3002\u4ee5\u524d\u4e00\u770b\u5230\u554f\u984c\uff0c\u5c31\u60f3\u8d95\u5feb\u89e3\u6c7a\u3002\u73fe\u5728\u6211\u4e5f\u5e38\u5e38\u63d0\u9192\u81ea\u5df1\uff0c\u4e5f\u8a31\u7b2c\u4e00\u6b65\u4e0d\u662f\u99ac\u4e0a\u89e3\u6c7a\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5148\u770b\u6e05\u695a\u81ea\u5df1\u5c0d\u9019\u4ef6\u4e8b\u60c5\u7684\u53cd\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As I practiced this method with the children every day, I became more and more aware that the person in the classroom who most needed to practice \u201cpause, notice, choose\u201d was often not the children, but myself. When many things happen in life, I often do not see the situation clearly first. Instead, I fall into my own thoughts about it. In the past, whenever I saw a problem, I wanted to fix it right away. Now I often remind myself that maybe the first step is not to solve it immediately, but to first clearly see my own reaction to the situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6709\u4e86\u9019\u6a23\u7684\u7df4\u7fd2\u4ee5\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u958b\u59cb\u66f4\u7559\u610f\u5b69\u5b50\u5728\u65e5\u5e38\u5c0f\u4e8b\u4e2d\u7684\u9078\u64c7\u3002\u5f88\u591a\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u6210\u9577\u4e0d\u662f\u5728\u5f88\u5927\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\u4e0a\u8868\u73fe\u51fa\u4f86\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u5728\u4e00\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u8d77\u4f86\u6642\uff0c\u80fd\u4e0d\u80fd\u505c\u4e0b\u4f86\uff0c\u80fd\u4e0d\u80fd\u9078\u64c7\u4e00\u500b\u66f4\u6709\u7f8e\u5fb7\u7684\u56de\u61c9\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

After practicing this, I also began to notice the choices the children made in small daily moments. Many times, their growth did not appear in big events, but in whether they could pause when a thought arose, and choose a more virtuous response.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4eca\u5e74\u7684\u5b78\u5e74\uff0c\u5728\u4e0b\u500b\u661f\u671f\u5c31\u7d50\u675f\u4e86\u3002\u6bcf\u5e74\u5b78\u671f\u7d50\u675f\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5c0f\u5b78\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u4e0d\u50c5\u6703\u62ff\u5230\u671f\u672b\u6210\u7e3e\u55ae\uff0c\u6bcf\u500b\u5b78\u751f\u4e5f\u6703\u5f97\u5230\u4e00\u5f35\u7f8e\u5fb7\u734e\u3002\u7f8e\u5fb7\u734e\u662f\u6211\u5011\u5b78\u6821\u7684\u516b<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u5fb7\u3002\u901a\u5e38\u662f\u7531\u73ed\u4e3b\u4efb\u8001\u5e2b\u89c0\u5bdf\u5b78\u751f\u4e00\u6574\u5e74\u7684\u8868\u73fe\uff0c\u518d\u6c7a\u5b9a\u6bcf\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u5728\u54ea\u4e00\u9805\u7f8e\u5fb7\u4e0a\u6709\u7279\u5225\u7a81\u51fa\u7684\u6210\u9577\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This school year will end next week. At the end of each school year, the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

elementary students do not only receive their final report cards.  Each student also receives a virtue award. The virtue award is based on our school’s eight virtues.  Usually, the core teacher observes the students\u2019 growth throughout the year and decides which virtue each student has shown most strongly.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u672c\u4f86\uff0c\u9019\u61c9\u8a72\u662f\u7531\u6211\u4f86\u6c7a\u5b9a\u6bcf\u500b\u5b78\u751f\u8981\u5f97\u5230\u54ea\u4e00\u9805\u7f8e\u5fb7\u734e\u3002\u4e0a\u4e00\u5468\uff0c\u6211\u8b93\u5b69\u5b50\u81ea\u5df1\u601d\u8003\uff1a\u9019\u4e00\u5b78\u5e74\uff0c\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u54ea\u4e00\u9805\u7f8e\u5fb7\u4e0a\u6210\u9577\u6700\u591a\uff1f\u7136\u5f8c\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u8981\u5beb\u4e00\u7bc7\u89c0\u9ede\u4f5c\u6587\uff0c\u4f5c\u70ba\u4eca\u5e74\u5beb\u4f5c\u8ab2\u6700\u5f8c\u7684\u8a55\u91cf\u5beb\u4f5c<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Originally, I was supposed to decide which virtue award each student would receive. Last week, I asked the children to reflect for themselves: Which virtue did I grow in the most this year? Then they had to write an opinion essay as their final benchmark writing for the year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u8981\u6c42\u4ed6\u5011\u4f9d\u7167\u89c0\u9ede\u4f5c\u6587\u7684\u7d50\u69cb\u4f86\u5beb\uff0c\u6709\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4e3b\u5f35\u3001\u7406\u7531\u3001\u4f8b\u5b50\u548c\u7d50\u5c3e\u3002\u540c\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u8981\u6c42\u4ed6\u5011\u5f15\u7528\u300a\u5f1f\u5b50\u898f\u300b\u88e1\u7684\u76f8\u95dc\u6bb5\u843d\uff0c\u6216\u5f15\u7528\u6211\u5011\u5b78\u904e\u7684\u4e9e\u91cc\u65af\u591a\u5fb7\u95dc\u65bc\u7f8e\u5fb7\u7684\u4e00\u53e5\u8a71\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I asked them to use the structure of opinion writing, with a claim, reasons,<\/p>\n\n\n\n

examples, and a conclusion. I also asked them to cite either a line from the Standards for Students or the quote we learned together from Aristotle about virtue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4e8c\u3001\u4e09\u5e74\u7d1a\u7684\u5b69\u5b50\u96d6\u7136\u5e74\u7d00\u5c0f\uff0c\u5e73\u5747\u5e74\u9f61\u53ea\u6709\u516b\u6b72\u5de6\u53f3\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u6700\u5f8c\u5beb\u51fa\u4f86\u7684\u4f5c\u6587\uff0c\u8b93\u6211\u770b\u5230\u5f88\u771f\u5be6\u7684\u5584\u6839\u548c\u89ba\u5bdf\u3002\u4ed6\u5011\u7684\u4f5c\u6587\u4e0d\u6703\u7528\u5f88\u591a\u4f5b\u6559\u540d\u8a5e\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u4ed6\u5011\u5df2\u7d93\u958b\u59cb\u5b78\u7fd2\u89c0\u5bdf\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5fc3\uff0c\u5b78\u7fd2\u5982\u4f55\u9762\u5c0d\u60c5\u7dd2\u3001\u95dc\u4fc2\u548c\u9078\u64c7\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Even though the second and third graders are still young, with an average age of about eight, their final essays helped me see genuine goodness<\/p>\n\n\n\n

and awareness in their hearts. They may not use many Buddhist terms in their writing, but they are already beginning to learn how to observe their minds and how to face emotions, relationships, and choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u73fe\u5728\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u548c\u5927\u5bb6\u5206\u4eab\u6211\u7684\u4e00\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u7f8e\u5fb7\u4f5c\u6587\u3002\u6211\u5df2\u7d93\u5fb5\u5f97\u9019\u4f4d\u540c\u5b78\u7684\u540c\u610f\uff0c\u5728\u5927\u6bbf\u5206\u4eab\u4ed6\u7684\u4f5c\u6587\u3002\u9019\u4f4d\u540c\u5b78\u5beb\u7684\u662f\u8aa0\u4fe1\u3002\u4ed6\u7684\u4f5c\u6587\u8b93\u6211\u975e\u5e38\u611f\u52d5\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u4ed6\u5df2\u7d93\u80fd\u5920\u5beb\u51fa\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u5bb3\u6015\u548c\u8aa0\u5be6\u4e4b\u9593\u7684\u9078\u64c7\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now, I would like to share one of my students\u2019 virtue essay with everyone. I already got permission from this student to share their essay with everyone in the Buddha Hall.  This student wrote about trustworthiness. Their essay moved me deeply because they were able to write about the choice between fear and honesty.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u516b\u6b72\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u9019\u6a23\u5beb\u9053\uff1a\u300c\u6211\u76f8\u4fe1\u6211\u503c\u5f97\u5f97\u5230\u8aa0\u4fe1\u734e\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u6211\u5f88\u591a\u6b21\u8868\u73fe\u51fa\u9019\u500b\u7f8e\u5fb7\u3002\u7b2c\u4e00\u500b\u539f\u56e0\u662f\uff0c\u7576\u5225\u4eba\u554f\u6211\u670b\u53cb\u7684\u79d8\u5bc6\u6642\uff0c\u6211\u6703\u5e6b\u670b\u53cb\u4fdd\u5b88\u79d8\u5bc6\u3002\u5373\u4f7f\u5225\u4eba\u4e00\u76f4\u7169\u6211\uff0c\u6211\u4e5f\u4e0d\u6703\u7de8\u9020\u5047\u7684\u6545\u4e8b\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This is an eight years old student wrote: \u201cI believe I deserve the trustworthiness award because I showed this virtue many times this school year. My first reason is that I keep my friends\u2019 secrets to myself when<\/p>\n\n\n\n

people ask me for others\u2019 secrets. I wouldn\u2019t make up a fake story<\/p>\n\n\n\n

even if they start to annoy me. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f8b\u5982\uff0c\u6709\u4e00\u6b21\u670b\u53cb\u628a\u6211\u62c9\u5230\u65c1\u908a\uff0c\u544a\u8a34\u6211\u4e00\u4ef6\u4e8b\u60c5\u3002\u5f8c\u4f86\u6211\u6c92\u6709\u544a\u8a34\u4efb\u4f55\u4eba\u3002\u6709\u4e9b\u4eba\u4e00\u76f4\u5728\u7169\u6211\uff0c\u60f3\u77e5\u9053\u9019\u4ef6\u4e8b\uff0c\u53ef\u662f\u6211\u9084\u662f\u6c92\u6709\u7de8\u6545\u4e8b\u8b93\u81ea\u5df1\u812b\u96e2\u9ebb\u7169\u3002\u90a3\u6642\u5019\u6211\u5176\u5be6\u5f88\u60f3\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\u5f85\u8457\uff0c\u4e5f\u5e0c\u671b\u4ed6\u5011\u4e0d\u8981\u518d\u7169\u6211\u3002\u53ef\u662f\u5f8c\u4f86\u6211\u7a81\u7136\u60f3\u5230\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u4ed6\u5011\u767c\u73fe\u6211\u8aaa\u8b0a\uff0c\u4ed6\u5011\u4ee5\u5f8c\u5c31\u4e0d\u6703\u518d\u76f8\u4fe1\u6211\u4e86\u3002\u53e6\u4e00\u500b\u539f\u56e0\u662f\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u6211\u5f04\u4e1f\u6771\u897f\u6216\u5fd8\u8a18\u9084\u6771\u897f\uff0c\u6211\u4e0d\u6703\u8aaa\u8b0a\u3002\u6211\u4e0d\u6703\u70ba\u4e86\u812b\u96e2\u9ebb\u7169\u800c\u602a\u5225\u4eba\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For example, after one friend pulled me over to tell me something, I didn\u2019t tell anybody after. Eventually they started to annoy me a lot. But I still didn\u2019t make a fake story to get myself out of this trouble. At that time I wanted to be alone and hoped to have them stop.  But then, I suddenly thought that they wouldn\u2019t trust me any more if they found out I lied.  Another reason is that I never lied about if I lost something or forgot to return something. I wouldn\u2019t make up a lie to blame others or to get myself out of trouble.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4eca\u5e74\u6211\u5728\u8ab2\u9593\u4f11\u606f\u6642\u9593\u8dd1\u4f86\u8dd1\u53bb\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u4e0d\u5c0f\u5fc3\u649e\u5012\u4e86\u7537\u751f\u5011\u505a\u7684\u6a39\u679d\u5c0f\u5c4b\u3002\u90a3\u500b\u7537\u751f\u554f\u6211\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u6c7a\u5b9a\u8aaa\u5be6\u8a71\u3002\u90a3\u6642\u5019\u6211\u5176\u5be6\u5f88\u60f3\u8aaa\uff1a\u300e\u6211\u4e0d\u77e5\u9053\u4f60\u5728\u8aaa\u4ec0\u9ebc\u3002\u300f\u56e0\u70ba\u6211\u6015\u81ea\u5df1\u6703\u60f9\u9ebb\u7169\u3002\u53ef\u662f\u5f8c\u4f86\u6211\u9084\u662f\u9078\u64c7\u505a\u5c0d\u7684\u4e8b\u60c5\uff0c\u4e26\u627f\u8a8d\uff1a\u300e\u662f\u6211\u505a\u7684\u3002\u300f\u6211\u5f88\u958b\u5fc3\u81ea\u5df1\u5728\u8aa0\u4fe1\u65b9\u9762\u6210\u9577\u4e86\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u5b83\u8b93\u6211\u6210\u70ba\u66f4\u597d\u7684\u5b78\u751f\u548c\u540c\u5b78\uff0c\u4e5f\u8b93\u6211\u4ea4\u5230\u65b0\u7684\u670b\u53cb\uff0c\u4e26\u4e14\u5c0d\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u884c\u70ba\u66f4\u8ca0\u8cac\u4efb\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

This year I accidentally knocked down one of the boys\u2019 troll houses in the playground when I was running. When that boy asked me, I decided to tell the truth. At that time, I wanted to say,  \u2018I don\u2019t know what you\u2019re talking about,\u2019 because he might get me in trouble. But I chose to do the right thing and say, \u2018I did it.\u2019 I\u2019m proud that I grew in trustworthiness because it helped me I\u2019m proud that I grew in trustworthiness because it helped me<\/p>\n\n\n\n

become a better student and classmate. It also helped me make<\/p>\n\n\n\n

new friends and become more responsible for my actions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u6211\u66f4\u6709\u8cac\u4efb\u611f\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u5225\u4eba\u4e5f\u6703\u66f4\u4fe1\u4efb\u6211\u3002\u53e4\u5e0c\u81d8\u54f2\u5b78\u5bb6\u66fe\u7d93\u8aaa\u904e\uff1a<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u300c\u300e\u7f8e\u5fb7\u4e0d\u662f\u4e00\u6b21\u55ae\u7368\u7684\u884c\u70ba\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u4e00\u7a2e\u7fd2\u6163\u3001\u4e00\u7a2e\u6a21\u5f0f\u3001\u4e00\u7a2e\u751f\u6d3b\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u300f\u300d\u6211\u540c\u610f\u9019\u53e5\u8a71\uff0c\u56e0\u70ba\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u8aa0\u4fe1\u5df2\u7d93\u6162\u6162\u8b8a\u6210\u6211\u7684\u751f\u6d3b\u65b9\u5f0f\u3002\u7d9c\u4e0a\u6240\u8ff0\uff0c\u6211\u76f8\u4fe1\u6211\u503c\u5f97\u5f97\u5230\u8aa0\u4fe1\u734e\u3002\u300d<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I\u2019m more responsible, other people trust me more. The ancient Greek philosopher said, \u2018Virtue is not a solitary act,  but a habit, pattern, a way of being.\u2019 I agree with him because I\u2019ve been living in trustworthiness as a way of living for the school year. Therefore, I believe I should get this award of trustworthiness.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u7576\u6211\u8b80\u5230\u9019\u7bc7\u4f5c\u6587\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u5f88\u611f\u52d5\u3002\u56e0\u70ba\u9019\u4e0d\u53ea\u662f\u4e00\u500b\u5c0f\u5b69\u5b50\u5728\u5beb\u300c\u6211\u8981\u8aa0\u5be6\u300d\u3002\u4ed6\u5df2\u7d93\u958b\u59cb\u5b78\u7fd2\u89c0\u5bdf\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5ff5\u982d\uff0c\u89c0\u5bdf\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5bb3\u6015\uff0c\u4e5f\u89c0\u5bdf\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u9078\u64c7\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I read this essay, I felt deeply moved.  This was not simply a child writing about \u201cI should be honest.\u201d  They are already learning to observe their own thoughts, their fear, and their choices.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u4f5b\u6cd5\u88e1\u5e38\u8b1b\uff0c\u4e00\u5207\u5f9e\u4e00\u5ff5\u958b\u59cb\u3002\u5f9e\u9019\u4f4d\u5b78\u751f\u7684\u6587\u7ae0\u53ef\u4ee5\u770b\u51fa\uff0c\u4f5b\u6cd5\u6709\u6642\u5019\u4e0d\u662f\u5f88\u9060\u7684\u6771\u897f\u3002\u4f5b\u6cd5\u53ef\u80fd\u5c31\u5728\u4e00\u500b\u5c0f\u5b69\u6c7a\u5b9a\u8981\u4e0d\u8981\u8aaa\u5be6\u8a71\u7684\u90a3\u500b\u5ff5\u982d\u88e1\u9762\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Buddhism, we often say that everything begins from one thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

From this student\u2019s writing we can see that the Dharma is not something far away. Sometimes the Dharma is inside the very moment when a child decides whether or not to tell the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u5feb\u7d50\u675f\u4e86\uff0c\u56de\u982d\u770b\uff0c\u6211\u767c\u73fe\u5b69\u5b50\u5011\u6210\u9577\u4e86\u5f88\u591a\u3002\u6211\u4e5f\u767c\u73fe\uff0c\u6210\u9577\u7684\u4e0d\u53ea\u662f\u5b69\u5b50\uff0c\u6211\u81ea\u5df1\u4e5f\u5728\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u6539\u8b8a\u4e86\u3002\u6211\u66f4\u6e05\u695a\u5730\u770b\u898b\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u4e0d\u8db3\uff0c\u6211\u7684\u6539\u8b8a\u4e5f\u4e0d\u662f\u56e0\u70ba\u6211\u7684\u7169\u60f1\u6e1b\u5c11\u4e86\uff0c\u800c\u662f\u56e0\u70ba\u6709\u4e9b\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6709\u6642\u5019<\/s>\u6211\u80fd\u65e9\u9ede\u770b\u898b\u7169\u60f1\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

As this school year comes closer to the end, I look back and see that the<\/p>\n\n\n\n

children have grown a lot. I also realized that the children were not the only<\/p>\n\n\n\n

ones who grew. I was also changed by this year.  I can see my shortcomings more clearly. It is also not because I have less afflictions, but because sometimes I can see them earlier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6211\u7d93\u5e38\u807d\u5230\u548c\u770b\u5230\u9019\u4e00\u53e5\u8a71\uff1a\u300c\u7169\u60f1\u5373\u83e9\u63d0\u300d\u7576\u6211\u80fd\u770b\u898b\u7169\u60f1\u7684\u6642\u5019\uff0c\u6211\u624d\u6709\u6a5f\u6703\u6162\u6162\u56de\u4f86\uff0c\u56de\u5230\u547c\u5438\uff0c\u56de\u5230\u89ba\u5bdf\uff0c\u56de\u5230\u6148\u60b2\uff0c\u4e5f\u56de\u5230\u90a3\u9846\u9858\u610f\u4ee5\u5584\u610f\u548c\u6eab\u67d4\u8207\u4eba\u9023\u7d50\u7684\u521d\u5fc3\u3002<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

I often read and heard this teaching that affliction itself can become Bodhi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

When I can see my afflictions, I have the opportunity to slowly return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

return to the breath, return to awareness, return to compassion, and return to the original heart that wanted to connect with others with kindness and good intentions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6240\u4ee5\uff0c\u5982\u679c\u8981\u8aaa\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u6211\u6709\u4ec0\u9ebc\u9ad4\u6703\uff0c\u6211\u60f3\u7528\u5f88\u7c21\u55ae\u7684\u4e00\u53e5\u8a71\u4f86\u7e3d\u7d50\uff1a\u6211\u6162\u6162\u7406\u89e3\u4e86\u4ec0\u9ebc\u662f\u5728\u7576\u4e0b\u9019\u4e00\u5ff5\u3002\u9019\u4e00\u5ff5\u88e1\uff0c\u6709\u6211\u600e\u6a23\u9762\u5c0d\u4e00\u500b\u4eba\uff0c\u600e\u6a23\u8aaa\u4e00\u53e5\u8a71\uff0c\u600e\u6a23\u653e\u4e0b\u4e00\u500b\u57f7\u8457\uff0c\u600e\u6a23\u5728\u5fd9\u4e82\u4e2d\u91cd\u65b0\u627e\u56de\u81ea\u5df1\u7684\u5fc3<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So if I were to say what I realized and learned this year,I would say it in one simple sentence: I slowly began to understand what it means to practice in this present thought. In this one thought, there is how I face a person, how I speak one sentence, how I let go of one attachment, and how I find my mind again in the middle of busyness.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u6700\u5f8c\uff0c\u6211\u5f88\u611f\u6069\u8af8\u4f5b\u83e9\u85a9\u3001\u5ba3\u516c\u4e0a\u4eba\u3001\u5404\u4f4d\u6cd5\u5e2b\u3001\u5b78\u6821\u3001\u540c\u4e8b\u3001\u5b78\u751f\u548c\u5bb6\u4eba\u7684\u8b77\u6301\u3002\u611f\u6069\u9019\u4e00\u5e74\u6240\u6709\u9806\u7684\u5883\u754c\uff0c\u4e5f\u611f\u6069\u6240\u6709\u4e0d\u9806\u7684\u5883\u754c\u3002\u9806\u7684\u5883\u754c\u7d66\u6211\u9f13\u52f5\uff0c\u4e0d\u9806\u7684\u5883\u754c\u8b93\u6211\u770b\u898b\u81ea\u5df1<\/strong>\u3002<\/p>\n\n\n\n
